You are not going to believe this. Bush asked a federal appeals court to stop meatpackers from testing all of their animals for mad cow disease. Currently, only 1% of animals are tested, and if all animals were tested, it would only raise the price of meat a few pennies per pound. Is Bush's request penny wise but pound foolish?
The main issue here is that it took a court ruling to allow a meatpacker to test all of its animals in the first place. Creekstone Farms Premium Beef is the company that is doing this on their own, and is doing so to satisfy requirements from Japan and the EU so that it can export beef to those markets. This is what Bush is attempting to shut down. I hope the final verdict from the judge to the administration is "None of your freaking business. This is a free market, isn't it? This is not the former Soviet Union, is it?".
