I'll have to cut in for Publius here for obvious reasons:

Political principles are the ideals for government and society that people hold. These ideals are always the ideals, and the goal does not change depending on where government and society are currently. In this way, principles are not relative, but people can be non-principled and pragmatic in their approach to society and government if they think that it is for the greater good. These, however, are not principles.
