Default Slavery

Why would someone allow another person to enslave them?

Would fight to my death before allowing anyone to enslave me.

Actually back in Biblical time you could sell yourself into slavery for up to 7 years. I thought you of all people would know that.

Yes. I would not allow it to happen.

If I had a family, the option of fighting might change, but if I was all alone, I'd definitely fight and die for freedom (even if it meant nothing).

It depends on the circumstances. In Roman times, being a slave to a wealthy senator could mean living in the lap of luxury. In a time when 90 percent of the population lived in abject poverty and squalor, this would have been a big deal. True, there was a loss of autonomy, but "freedom" on the outside was by and large an illusion anyway. Many slaves would fight to their deaths to save their masters from harm in those days.

There is no room for slavery in life.

Living a life of luxury or otherwise while your life is enslaved to another man is no life at all.

Sez you. Relativism, friend. To us and our way of life, yes, it's unthinkable. But people everywhere don't live as we do, and our modern way of living and thinking has not been a historical constant.

I could live without material items as long as I lived with freedom (maximum freedom).

I think it's easy to say you'd choose death over slavery -- right up until you are actually offered that choice.

I view the question the same way I viewed the possibility of being captured by the enemy when I was in the Army: I'd go to great lengths to avoid it, but if I were caught and had a gun to my head, I would accept it as a temporary inconvenience while I plotted escape.

Where there is life, there is hope. And being a slave does not mean you accept slavery. They can own my body if they're strong enough; they can't own my mind or spirit.

That's an interesting perspective that I didn't consider and I'll concede that you are correct.
