Why would someone allow another person to enslave them?
Would fight to my death before allowing anyone to enslave me. Last edited by Yeshua_Lives; 06-03-2008 at 02:31 PM. |

It depends on the circumstances. In Roman times, being a slave to a wealthy senator could mean living in the lap of luxury. In a time when 90 percent of the population lived in abject poverty and squalor, this would have been a big deal. True, there was a loss of autonomy, but "freedom" on the outside was by and large an illusion anyway. Many slaves would fight to their deaths to save their masters from harm in those days.

I could live without material items as long as I lived with freedom (maximum freedom).

I think it's easy to say you'd choose death over slavery -- right up until you are actually offered that choice.
I view the question the same way I viewed the possibility of being captured by the enemy when I was in the Army: I'd go to great lengths to avoid it, but if I were caught and had a gun to my head, I would accept it as a temporary inconvenience while I plotted escape. Where there is life, there is hope. And being a slave does not mean you accept slavery. They can own my body if they're strong enough; they can't own my mind or spirit.
