Default The Iraq Success

Iraq and the Election

June 6, 2008; Page A14

This spring, the Iraqi army routed insurgents in three of their most important urban strongholds. These gains follow the success of the surge in crushing al Qaeda in the Sunni triangle, meaning that we are at last on the verge of winning in Iraq and securing a strategic victory in the Middle East. Question: Is this emerging victory – achieved at a cost of more than 4,000 American lives – something we are prepared to abandon after November?

We are winning in Iraq. Indeed, we can now say with certainty that we will win, as long as we don't repeat our earlier mistakes and seek to draw down too soon. This is the improving Iraq that the next U.S. President will inherit, and it is the heart of the Iraq debate Americans should have in November.

The Iraqi Upturn

Don't look now, but the U.S.-backed government and army may be winning the war.

THERE'S BEEN a relative lull in news coverage and debate about Iraq in recent weeks -- which is odd, because May could turn out to have been one of the most important months of the war. While Washington's attention has been fixed elsewhere, military analysts have watched with astonishment as the Iraqi government and army have gained control for the first time of the port city of Basra and the sprawling Baghdad neighborhood of Sadr City, routing the Shiite militias that have ruled them for years and sending key militants scurrying to Iran. At the same time, Iraqi and U.S. forces have pushed forward with a long-promised offensive in Mosul, the last urban refuge of al-Qaeda. So many of its leaders have now been captured or killed that U.S. Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker, renowned for his cautious assessments, said that the terrorists have "never been closer to defeat than they are now

If the positive trends continue, proponents of withdrawing most U.S. troops, such as Mr. Obama, might be able to responsibly carry out further pullouts next year. Still, the likely Democratic nominee needs a plan for Iraq based on sustaining an improving situation, rather than abandoning a failed enterprise. That will mean tying withdrawals to the evolution of the Iraqi army and government, rather than an arbitrary timetable; Iraq's 2009 elections will be crucial. It also should mean providing enough troops and air power to continue backing up Iraqi army operations such as those in Basra and Sadr City. When Mr. Obama floated his strategy for Iraq last year, the United States appeared doomed to defeat. Now he needs a plan for success.

There is no more argument here. Iraq is a success.

No sir, I asked for an example of someone winning in Iraq other than the US. You responded with conjecture, indicating your desire for the insurgents to win the war on terrorism.

Again, what I am asking you for is an example of a win, by a party other than the US. We can readily see your desire for the US to not be winning. What is not clear is what you're using to prop up the delusion that someone other than the US is winning. What are you using to prop up that delusion?

Sunni, well said. What you also forgot to mention was almost the entire Murdoch press here in the UK and the likes of the BBC News and Sky News.

I seem to remember the US had "won" when the statue of Saddam was toppled in front of a compliant TV news media and a crowd that numbered no more than perhaps 200. The US was again declared a winner when "we" caught Saddam. Expect many more declarations of victory in the future. The truth is that the notion that Bush has won is a complete illusion, invented by Whitehouse propaganda and regurgitated by a compliant corporate media.

The reality is that Bush intends to push through a secret deal being negotiated in Baghdad by the end of July in order to justify the military victory that you DUHR and others refer to and thus claim his 2003 invasion has been vindicated. So expect yet another announcement of victory at the end of July.

Hairymarx, I am a child of the Vietnam War.

I remember the U.S. government and the military declaring "Victory" time and time again.

Just like we are doing in Iraq.

What a joke!!!!
