.....you often here people classify themselves and others.......if a person is black, then the person is "african american"

however, if a person is white, then the person is "caucasian" or just "white".....

why don't people (employment agency, employers, etc...) classify white people as....."german american"....or "irish american"....or "dutch american".....etc

you hear it often in the news........"the first 'african american'......" blah blah blah......

by the way, is mcain an 'irish american'?

I meant that when I see Irish-American, Mexican-American, African-American, etc I just see the "American" part. The labels are the "they" I was referring to.

Well technically it would be "European American". Africa is a continent, not a country.

The main reason for the term's origin is that "black" had become a term that was given negative charge by its history of usage.
It's back in use now as that negativity has gone away. I think black is actually the preferred term now, but who knows?

What do you call someone in America who is black but isn't from Africa?

I was born in the Philippines, because my parents (who are both born in the U.S.) were there at the time. Does the soil I was born on make me filipino?

Where did the "Black" in their skin originate from? The only Americans I know of are Native.
