In the Pledge of Allegiance, it says "and to the REPUBLIC for which its stands".
However, people always say restoring "democracy" to a foreign nation. A true democracy, or a direct democracy, as I understand it, is literally voting on the issues, or randomly selected representitives, as there was in Athens, in Ancient Greece. In America, we elect leaders to represent the people, a republican quality. Would this qualify America as a republic, and not a democracy? Or is a republic a type of democracy? Also, how did the terms "democrat" and "republican" come about? |

Democracy vs. Republic
The American government is a Federalist Republic, not a true democracy. However, when the system of Federalist Republicanism was put into effect with the ratification of the Constitution, it came to be known as the modern form of democracy. And the only form of democracy that actually works. Therefore, whether you call the US a democracy or a republic really doesn't matter, because by technical terms, it is a republic. The Republican party was created as the descendant of the Federalist Party, made up of the people who founded our country on the Federalist Republican ideal. The Democratic party came from the Jacksonian period, in which pure democracy was a greater influence on the country than it had been before.

Yes, under Andrew Jackson and his populist appeal, and it later incorporated the true Populist party into itself, and the descendant of the Populist party, the Progressives. While it might not directly affect the party today, the Democratic party has some really twisted roots, going back as the party of slavery, of segregation, and of the Progressive/populist Nazi/Fascist sympathizers. Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg, while you might not be able to tell by the title, is actually a history of the progressive movement, which is simply, as one person put it (I can't remember who) "Populism that had shaved its whiskers, washed it shirt, and moved up to the middle class." The modern Democratic party is a direct descendant of those Progressives. You can even see Obama and Clinton trying to refer to themselves as progressives instead of liberals! Foolish, and they would know if they knew the history of the movement. It's just not pretty.
