Default Is the UN really useful anymore?

In my opinion the United Nations seems to be the cause of more troubles to the larger, more powerful countries than it seems to be of use. For instance, as the U.S. was trying to invade Iraq because we thought they had "WMDs" (this thread is not a discussion of whether or not Saddam had them or not) the UN postponed the invasion long enough for Saddam to get rid of them if he even had them in the first place. It just seems to me that countries such as China, N.Korea, America, and Russia don't care what the UN thinks anyways so should the UN be dismantled?

The UN is simply a larger League of Nations, and we can all see how much good the League did the world. As for UN Peacekeeping forces, do they do any good? Should they interfere in smaller countries affairs in the first place?

It's an archaic organization. The U.S. should oust itself from the UN.

The U.N. is a leech on the world.

Imagine all the extra funds we'd have if the USA stopped paying 75% of their bills!

Large nations coming together, uniting, to achieve unity and peace by giving up liberties, not of the individual people of each nation, but of the entire nation as a whole. Strange, how that doesn't sound democratic at all... oh, I forgot, democracy is strictly defined as voting, but... I don't remember voting on anything... in fact, it sounds like a republic of nations... all joining together... giving them ultimate power... and if power corrupts... ultimate power... They must be stopped.

U.S. Officials Divulge Reports On Confidential U.N. Audits

By Colum Lynch
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, February 17, 2008; Page A20

UNITED NATIONS -- The Bush administration has been posting hundreds of highly confidential U.N. audits and investigation reports on a U.S. government Web site, opening the United Nations' inner workings and some of its more colorful scandals to unusual public scrutiny.

Together, there are nearly 500 documents and thousands of pages constitute a trove of U.N. secrets stretching back over five years, including allegations of bribes paid for tsunami relief projects in Indonesia, of sexual harassment in Gaza and a revelation that a U.N. anti-drug official ran a presidential campaign while receiving a U.N. paycheck. The pages also document a spree of alleged criminal activities, including a bribery scheme at the airport in Pristina, Kosovo, gold trading by U.N. peacekeepers in Congo, and the theft and resale of food rations by Ukrainian pilots serving the United Nations in Liberia.

It makes for a forum to get together. And it proves useful when the big boys decide they want to deal with some rouge state that manages to annoy them all.

As for their peacekeeping forces I think the more the rest of the world chips in on this sort of stuff the better.

Personally I think peoples issues with the UN stem largely from expecting it to be more than it is.

This thread is about destroying the UN. Why would the people who want it destroyed expect anything out of it?

Like in Darfur? Bosnia?

The U.N. can't be expected to do ANYTHING anymore. That's the point. Even with dealing with Iraq. Resolution after resolution after resolution were written up over Hussein. Did the U.N. do anything? No. Too many of their members had under-the-table deals with Hussein.

How many under-the-table deals do they have with Iran? Al Qaida? Maybe that's why the U.N. is allowing Iran to build nuclear weapons. Obviously, it doesn't take much to buy off one of these scum. I wouldn't doubt that 2/3 of the U.N. members are on the take, in one form or another, from the very groups of terrorists they (allegedly) say they're against.
