Despite losing some popularity in recent polls, Osama is still probably the Most Popular single person in the Muslim World.

Osama just went To far, Too Fast, too violently, in achieving what the vast majority hope for:
The Caliphate and Sharia Law.

Yes, his single act in the short Run hurt the religion.

Tho as I said he is still the most popular man in the Muslim world.

But the enemy of Islam (the point of the string) is the USA/West and it's Popular/Secular/Decadent culture, NOT Pious Osama.

There are not irreconcilable differences between Islam and the West. Approximately 1.8 million Muslims live in the United States, 3 million in Germany, 1.6 million in Britain, 4.4 million in France, Italy has a growing Muslim community, and those are just a few western countries.

Abdolkarim Soroush is a well known Iranian scholar who has written a lot on how Islam and democracy complement each other.
