Well, of course he did NOT. He said he would take public financing if the GOP nominee and himself could come to an agreement on it. Obama's people met with McCain's people and came to the determination that McCain wasn't serious about doing what he could to rein in the influence of the 527s that would spend tens of millions to slime and smear him. He made the only decision he could.

And McCain did not agree to take public financing until AFTER Obama said he would not.

So you see, there are two TRUTHS.. actual, checkable FACTS that prove Obama did NOT go back on his word.

Of course, the mainstream conservative media and the people who don't want to dig deeper than the first sentence of the lead will see it like you do... and that's fine.

McCain has over 12 times more public financing dollars than Obama. That's an understandable reason to change his mind.

He's definitely right to do it. Chalk it up to naivete on Obama's part to even make such a promise. The only people who are really going to make a big deal out of this are those who aren't going to vote for him anyway. Even the writer of the article still plans to vote Obama.

This is the reason he kept his promise vague anyway. He's smarter than most people give him credit for.
I don't like it, but he's correct. Our public financing system is broken.

It's a sad fact of life. Even if a candidate is serious about reform... they first must win through the system we are currently in.

It's disappointing... but understandable.
This is within my BS threshold for politicians (which by the way if yours is 0... don't bother voting- you will soon abandon all choices if you really look at the campaigns).

I agree. It was clear that obama was going to go this route for a while now. and yes, it's within my BS threshold as well, but it's still disappointing.

I understand the strategy behind the move, and I realize that he did not explicitly state that he would forego public financing if his opponent did.

But when he made that original proclamation, he had no problem with media reports oversimplifying his position because it was great publicity.

He should have reigned in the misunderstandings back then.... he didn't, and now the (rightful) perception is that he reneged on a promise.

There are many more reasons to not vote for Obama than the one mentioned here. I'll give a few that are important to me.

1. Redistribution of wealth
2. Increase in the scope and size of government
3. Radical-left SC judges
4. Either: a) terrible judge of character or b) doesn't mind associating with terrorists and racist radicals for 20 years
