Default This is a public service annoucement...with guitars!

Yeah so that is the Clash. Sue me.

Here is a little history for you kiddies out there.

To the rest of us, how prophetic in nature is this little tidbit? And from my favourite band nonetheless.

Well your favorite band must also go by the name, The Stray Cats. That's Brian Setzer on guitar and vocals.

And also Slim Jim on the drums and Lee Rocker on bass. Quite a powerful message they put out here.

I should have thought of this. My bad brother. The thread title "this is a public service announcement....with guitars" is a line from a song by the Clash-Know your rights.

Couldn't stand listening to the song so here are the lyrics for anyone not in the mood for a headache:

Fifteen man taken captive in a hostile foreign land
Scorchin' sun beaming down onto miles and miles of sand
A mideast country being ruled
By a man who thinks it's fun
To hold our people in return
For a sjah that's on the run

I think it's funny
Freedom takes money

It's a heartache and it's hard luck
Well that's tough (*)(*)(*)(*)
Man it's no fun
Storm the Iranian embassy
Before they start shootin' down you and me

Scourge of suits in control
Of the diplomaticness
While the nations of the world
Look on and they care less
The Soviet Union won't agree
To an economic plan
And then they laugh and march their troops into Afghanistan

Orders from Moscow
Invade Teheran now

It's a heartache and it's hard luck
Well that's tough (*)(*)(*)(*)
Man it's no fun
Storm the Iranian embassy
Before they start shootin' at you and me

A nation worries and reads the papers
Hoping that no-one has died
Hearin' rumours that the hostages
Will soon be tried as spies
Demonstrations on the street
Saying that the end is near
The man from New York Times on vacation
Wants to know what happened here

Agressive acts now
We want the best now
Fifteen moms crying
Is my son dying ?

It's a heartache and it's hard luck
Well that's tough (*)(*)(*)(*)
Man it's no fun
Storm the Iranian embassy
Before they start shootin' at you and me

Pretty useless lyrics if you ask me. Storming the embassy in Tehran didn't do crap while using diplomacy and negotiations actually solved the whole mess.

Wow. So the embassy in Terhan was actually stormed? News to me buddy. Are you that elusive New York Times reporter the song talks about?

I have a problem with 80's rock, it doesn't suit me well. Not saying its bad or good, I just don't particularly like that sound and I am getting a headache.

Well for someone that wanted to remind the "kiddies" about history you seem to have forgotten the Iran Hostage Crisis in its entirety. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_hostage_crisis

Not sure if you remember the failed Operation Eagle Claw under Carter, but to me that was an attempt to storm the embassy that failed. It was only through negotiations that the hostages were released.

Ok. My apologies for presenting ageism as part of the picture. But I think you are missing the point of the video here. Who the heck was he saying should storm the embassy? Obviously it wasn't Americans as you purport it to be. He was talking directly to Persians.

Oh, I thought it was for the Americans since they are an american band. I assumed incorrectly I guess but I see no real hint that the lyrics were directed at Iranians.

So how many Americans were in London that year?

Did you not watch the video with a person rushing the stage?
happen thats up to you.
Either way it is besides the point. A clash of cultures happened even back then. If you want to be a leeming or lenning and preternd it didn't...

Well besides your post not making sense half-way through it, what does an American band in London have to do with lyrics directed at Persians? If anything its directed at western countries (or americans, since that's who was captured) like I "purported" earlier.

As for the guy rushing the stage... happens at rock concerts all the time... it doesn't necessarily mean a clash of civilizations.

As for a clash of cultures happening "back then", I agree, but I hardly think this song was directed at revolutionary Iranians that had banned all western music. Not a very large market if you know what I mean.
