If the candidates' wives advance a political position, that position should be cussed and discussed.

If the candidates' wives did something in the past that reflect on their ability to represent this country (take a look at Sarkozy's wife -- well, don't actually look at her nude pictures, but you know what I mean -- take a look at the effect on her ability to represent France), then that is a legitimate issue of discussion.

If you wan't to be off limits to get involved by giving speeches and such. It was sad that Obama complained that McCain wasn't saying Michelle should be off limits, if a man needs another man to protect his wife he shouldn't be anywhere close to the white house.
