Default Mayor Bloomberg: "..speak out against fear-mongering!"

-------------------------
Bloomberg defends Obama before Jewish group
Says deceptive efforts threaten to undo strides Jews, Muslims have made
updated 11:21 a.m. ET, Fri., June. 20, 2008

NEW YORK - Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged Jewish voters to denounce the whisper campaign that for months has pushed the false rumor that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is secretly a Muslim. Bloomberg warned a Jewish group in Boca Raton, Fla., on Friday that the attempt to portray Obama as a shadowy Muslim with a hidden agenda often targets Jewish voters online and with e-mails.

The deceptive campaign against Obama, who is Christian, "threatens to undo the enormous strides that Jews and Muslims have made together in this country," the New York mayor said.

The lies are "cloaked in concern for Israel, but the real concern is about partisan politics," said Bloomberg, who is Jewish. "This is wedge politics at its worst, and we've got to reject it - loudly, clearly and unequivocally."

Bloomberg, a billionaire independent, had considered making his own run for the White House this year, but decided against it. He has said his endorsement and potential financial backing could still be up for grabs, and there has been occasional chatter about how he might make a good running mate for either Obama or Republican John McCain.

Either way, Bloomberg's passionate defense of Obama in front of a Jewish audience in Florida could help the Illinois senator in the state, which is home to many Jewish voters. Some have questioned Obama's commitment to Israel; this stems partly from his stated willingness to talk with leaders of rogue nations, which McCain and others have criticized as a sign he underestimates the threat posed to Israel by Iran and others in the Middle East.

..snip..

One thing he has learned, Bloomberg said, is that one must speak out against those who spread "fear and stereotypes." "That's why I'm speaking out today," he said, "and I hope all of you will join me throughout this campaign in strongly speaking out against this fear mongering, no matter who you'll be voting for."

Because americans shouldn't have to feel bad about voting for a underqualified racist moron. Its just easier if we don't have to think about it!

I was really hoping Bloomberg would run this year. Maybe there's still an off-chance he'll be Obama's VP.

It is kind of bad that Bloomberg has to point out the obvious though. Are people in this country really getting that easily manipulated not to know what the swift-boating is really about?

This is the sort of message McCain himself could be spreading if he would separate himself from the fear mongers.

meeeh, not VP (BHO needs a Biden or Webb or Hagel). But maybe a secretary or cabinet position or advisor of some sort for Mike. anyhoo he's probably too busy running NYC.

Biden maybe. Webb or Hagel- suicide.
Keep in mind the trouble with Clinton's supporters. They'll come around... but I don't think a pro-life VP will help matters.
Especially since three on McCain's short-list are women (including the one that cynically talked up Clinton and her "persecution by the Democrats" to campaign for McCain).

Bloomberg's a natural. Independent, economic smarts, executive, Jewish, pro-life...
It's more a question of whether Bloomberg would actually take the job.

that will happen when obama goes after the likes of MoveOn for fear mongering about mccain.

remember mccain going after the nc gop and that talk show host who used hussein when trashing obama. if obama can't protect himself he can't protect us.

When has Move On done any "fear mongering" about McCain? Are you talking about the ad with the mother and the baby? Is she saying anything McCain did NOT say?

you are just as partisan as anyone else here, yes that is fear mongering as if Mccain is trying to throw babies into a war. plus there is no draft remember.

Well, no... he's not trying to "throw babies into a war," and the ad doesn't say he is. And there may not be a draft today, but how long do you think we can keep the military extended and drawn out like it is now... especially once Bush starts the war with Iran in September or October? How long do you think it will be until there IS a draft? And, as I recall, you -- sir -- are prime draft age! This is something YOU need to be worried about.

McCain said we could be in Iraq for 100 years. He said it.
