It's things like this that make "Health savings accounts" a joke though.
Unless you can save up a couple million and not get cancer, you'll still end up bankrupt.

That whole concept is a crapshoot. They really tried to push HSAs at my last employer. If you have a healthy year, you're fine. Any kind of problems, you going to pay mucho out of pocket. I suspect they were pushing it because it was good for the company. Not so good for employees.

In the spirit of "The Price Is Right," I'm going with $1, FTW.

You obviously don't understand HSA's.

Did they tell you about how much was in that account, at the start? That it would pay for all of those high deductibles you whine about? That 100% of it rolls over to the next year, if you (gasp!) take care of yourself, and avoid hospital stays?

You're right...HSA's are not so good for employees....the stupid ones who smoke, or pound Twinkies down their holes all day. For the rest of us, who can keep ourselves healthy, they're an excellent alternative.

HSA's were the best thing to come out of the Bush Administration.

Sue, when I was younger and your age I felt indestructable. I did 15 marathons and over 130 road races over a period of 20 years. Ate right, did great. You think its going to be like that for ever and you're going to live to be a 100. But health issues will hit you. You think not, but they do. I have become familiar with hospitals and doctors in the last few years and none of my issues were based on abusing my body. I'm a little heavier, but the exercise has given me some protection, particuliarly regarding blood pressure and a generally strong heart. However I've discovered that the body is a true miracle, especially regarding all the little small things it does every day but it doesn't take that much to make it seriously out of whack.

Sometimes you think illness happens to others based upon not taking care of their body. But you have genes that you have no effect over and the body can lose certain small but important functions as you age. I think HSAs would have worked had I started at 20 years old because I ran through the scenerios they gave and if you looked at my health in those days, it probably would have started out fine. But not starting now. And not for anybody who gets sick upon starting the program. And that isn't just people who abuse their bodies.

Trust me, you will lose that control you think you have over your body. You will share that with everyone here. You won't escape no matter how healthy you live.

if I remember correctly, after $9,000 out of pocket, my HSA kicks in at 90%, however it wasn't really my choice to get one, but all I could afford out of the 3 plans employer provided

Considering all the other bad things, yes that is one of the least bad.

If you really wanted to make this like The Price is Right, you would offer also offer a bonus for being within $100 of the correct answer. Just a thought.
