The point is that our school system is set up to teach kids stuff for the purpose of tests. Any real-life stuff taught in such a class will be reacted to in the same manner.

Classes of this nature must go beyond and make them retain it... which at the very least requires more than one class, more than one year to enforce retainment.
How about you make those arguments when it happens and stop being so annoying?

Believe it or not, that's all I learned in high school. The only differences between looking up the answers to questions in a text book and real life problems are that the problems are self generated (and those come to us rather easy) and the book usually changes each time. For example, I need to get out of debt, I can google it - simple as that. It's really no different from figuring out some math problem - all you need to know is where to look.

Doesn't mean everyone's going to listen to that advice though. Best credit card advice he gave was to pay them off right away and only spend money that you actually have. I personally only have a check card (debit) from my bank. This works great because it is just like a credit card except instead of getting a bill I'm just using money that I actually have. What a crazy concept, using money that you have when you have it instead of buying things on credit and paying for them later even if you have the money.

What I don't understand is how this country got so obsessed with credit and why someone who has NEVER had to borrow money (such as myself) automatically has bad credit since no credit is considered bad credit. I should have perfect credit since I've never had to borrow money for a loan, credit card, or anything else.

Anyways, there are three types of people:
1) Those who learn it themselves/get it before the others
2) Those who have to be guided to learn it
3) Those who will never learn it
And 'it' could be anything.
You have bad credit? Are you really young?

Also, that's not really teaching your about credit cards, and that's only a small section of what I listed. I had those classes too. I don't think I learned enough to really apply in real life.

While helpful, a course like this may be brushed aside by many because they don't care, or think they are too smart to subject themselves to a course of that nature.
A) Why does that matter?
B) I would like it.
C) Those who study will get more than just a good grade.
D) Those who do not study will be subjecting themselves to natural selection.
E) This is not a reason not to try.

You think I, an accounting major, wanted to take Spanish and Biology this spring?

Do you think I, a soon to be famous football player (in my dreams), wanted to take novels?

It's an unimaginative, non-inventive, broad based, cookie cutter approach that does virtually nothing to help our education system or our youth prepare for adulthood. If you really want to improve education in the U.S., it has to be done from the bottom up, not the top down. Public school systems not wanting to take on special needs kids because their standardized test scores will bring the school systems overall scores does no good.

i might get attacked by some who work in education, but i think our teachers leave much to be desired. some teachers have no business educating anyone, never mind kids. in earlier education, its not so bad; junior high and high school, however, lots of teachers who dont give a (*)(*)(*)(*), lol. there are some serious problems with the culture of our youth, too, but theres no practical way to fix that. im sure its a problem that goes beyond the front line, but low hangin fruit, naw mean?

and yes, i know some kids (i would say few) are just hopeless. dont get me wrong.

It would teach them how to rent, and its disadvantages and advantages. It would teach them how to get a good job, or how to get a good entry level job, and how to gain experience over time. How to research the things they're into and turn those things into money making opportunities. Teach them a lot about unions. People skills.

However, the basics would be about personal financing: insurance, retirement, personal book keeping and credit management.

I think these are the things that most Americans cannot do right now.
It is privatized, that is the major problem with secondary education. We should be investing more heavily in education.

Default .

In Texas, there is a legal mandate that economics classes which are required to graduate, must teach 6 weeks of personal finance.

Just another reason why Texas is better.
