Yesterday there was a news story coming out of San Francisco that made the mainstream media. Even Keith Olberman on MsNBC devoted a segment of his televised broadcast to the story. It was one of those stories that was certain to bring a smile to your face.

San Francisco has always been my favorite city in America. Everywhere you look it's a picture postcard. The Golden Gate Bridge, China Town, great restaurants everywhere, the cable cars, Coit Tower, sourdough bread, Fisherman's Wharf, the bay, it's a gorgeous city. On a cool summer night watching the fog roll in from the Pacific swallowing the Golden Gate Bridge is an amazing sight. Tony Bennett summed it up for me... you know the words.

I first discovered San Francisco in the 60's when I was sent to Ft. Ord, California in Monterrey for advanced infantry training, and have been back dozens of times since. It was one happenin' town in the 60's. Hippies everywhere, "If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.", although I didn't have much hair at the time as an Army infantryman. San Francisco also was the birthplace of topless dancing, gotta love 'em for that one too.

Yesterday's news story added one more reason to love San Francisco. They have a petition circulating, with apparently enough votes to pass, to rename one of their public works facilities. They feel the name change is warranted, and would be reflective of the service of a prominent American. They want to be the home of the George W. Bush Sewage Treatment Plant.

Although I certainly support that measure, and feel it's a honor and distinction earned many times over, I would challenge them on originality. The genesis of that idea didn't spring up in San Francisco. Nope, they can't claim it as an original idea. That concept first surfaced right here in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

On October 12, 2005 I sat at my computer and this "thought for the day" emerged....

When Karl Rove and the other neo-con architects realized they were actually going to capture the White House they quickly came to the understanding that while they were now entered in the Kentucky Derby, they were riding a mule with George W. Bush.

They immediately seized on the opportunity provided by 9-11 and used it as a way for Bush's handlers to cover for his incompetence. They shrewdly created an environment in which if anyone dared to criticize George W. Bush or any of his policies they were labeled a traitor. The hate mongers that populate AM radio jumped on the bandwagon and the fix was in. For a time it worked well for them.

Then came a storm of biblical proportions. Hurricane Katrina packed a wallop not just for the Gulf Coast, but for the White House as well. There was no denying the federal government's incompetence. There was no denying the incompetence of Bush's hand-picked disaster team. There was no denying Bush squandered the four years since 9-11 and failed to actually produce a national disaster plan. We saw it play out right before our eyes day after day.

The media started asking questions and when the Bush administration replied with mumbo-jumbo they asked again, and again, and again. Finally, it became acceptable to simply say, "The emperor has no clothes."

No one was shipped off to Guantanamo Bay. The FBI didn't come to visit. No journalist was arrested for treason. They just did their job, reported the news and asked the questions.

The legacy of George W. Bush will not give him a place on Mt. Rushmore. We don't celebrate incompetence in America. So what does that leave the dwindling Bush supporters and professional excusers and rationalizers who blindly cling to the myth and want to pay homage to his legacy?

Well, I have a suggestion.

As America starts to rebuild New Orleans, let's give Bush a monument there, at ground zero of the American awakening. Let's create the George W. Bush Sewage Treatment Plant. That's a good fit.

It was a good idea then. It remains a good idea today. Maybe it can actually turn into a movement of sorts. San Francisco can be the first city to have a George W. Bush Sewage Treatment Plant. We can encourage other cities, towns and villages across America to do the same. We can watch that idea turn it into dozens, hundreds, even thousands of George W. Bush Sewage Treatment Plants from coast to coast.

As the fragrance emanating from one of the George W. Bush Sewage Treatment Plants occasionally is caught in a breeze that floats across a community, it would serve as a reminder to the residents of the true legacy of George W. Bush.
