By your logic, men shouldn't be paying for breast cancer research and women shouldn't be paying for prison.
It does not keep the air clean, even if it is somewhat cleaner than non-mass transit. It doesn't keep people out of hospitals, and it doesn't keep the cost of healthcare down. It does not benefit everyone. In addition, the second two only benefit people if a system where people pay for other people is already in place.

Payments for breast cancer research shouldn't be divided on the basis of sex, and neither should prison. And there is benefit to women paying for prison, it keeps criminals out of their towns.

You have to keep a perspective on the differences between this country and European countries.

Mass Transit would not work nearly as well as it would in Europe because we are no where near as densely populated as Europe. We are also highly centralized in that the Midwest is heavy in farm land, while coastal cities tend to be urban and house many industrial complexes. In addition to being densely populated, I remember reading that many countries in Europe have agriculture and housing dispersed such that transportation costs are lower.

The solution is simply developing better or more mass transit in densely populated cities, while still pursuing economical personal transportation because our nation is entirely dependent on it and it isn't something you could change in probably a hundred years.

Don't worry in the future, everyone will use it. This place is going to get crowded, and get crowded very fast. WHAT, build more highways you say. Nope, it is not going to alleviate the problem. Like Yoda says, build more highways more will come or be with you, the force will!

Well, until that future comes....

According to wtrg.com, the first signs of these problems began as early as 1999, and by 2001, became more and more prevalent.

"Prices began to recover in early 1999 and OPEC reduced production another 1.719 million barrels in April. As usual not all of the quotas were observed but between early 1998 and the middle of 1999 OPEC production dropped by about 3 million barrels per day and was sufficient to move prices above $25 per barrel."

Given that these problems began in 1999, and have grown worse since, shouldn't the GOP, which had control of the gov't at the time, made the necessary preparations.

This is exacerbated by the issue of building times for new drills and new refineries.

To begin drilling in ANWR would take at least 9 years to build the necessary infrastructure to drill, as explained in an article by MSNBC.

So, shouldn't the GOP, knowing how long it would take to build oil wells, have taken the necessary precautions?

I don't see how you can blame the Democrats for this problem, given that the GOP could have fixed the problem years ago, but chose not to.

Perhaps because they realized that drilling in ANWR just isn't worth it. Most studies state that at best, it would only reduce the price of oil by 50-75 cents, which would have a minor affect on gas. Furthermore, we would still need to import about 2/3s of our oil, so we would hardly be energy independent. Buy into the environment or not, domestic oil accidents have happened, and will happen. Considering how much it would cost to build the oil-wells there, how little it would help, and the risks it entails, perhaps even the GOP (at the time) realized it was a bad decision. Now, it seems like little more than a speech-act to get the votes of the populace when price of gas is so high (similiar to the stupid gas-tax holiday idea).

I agree that we need to become energy independent, but ANWR isn't going to make that happen by any stretch of the imagination. I agree that alternative-energy is a pipe-dream with no conclusive track-record, and very poor energy/econ ratios, so I don't think that is the solution either.
Six months ago oil was around $70, and two years ago gasoline was still around $2.30. That is very significant. Do I blame them for doing nothing? Yes, but it's foolish to care about something that's done with. What matters is right now. The problem has ballooned, and congress refuses to do a thing about it.

I think they want the economy bad. The average person thinks Bush owns all of the worlds oil and that he's making a fortune off it (which is not true). They want the higher gas prices to be sinonimos with George Bush for the purpose of winning the election.

Since I live in Michigan, I'm against it.

Healthcare has nothing to do with mass transit.

It would not effect the number of people who go to the hospital.

Women go to prison.

What, open up domestic sources of oil while gas prices were not an issue? That's political suicide! We had to wait until they passed $4 a gallon before we could get decent support, and even now many people oppose it. So when gas prices double again in 10 years, people will be say "Why didn't we do anything 10 year ago?" What is a politician to do?
