Dear Senator Nelson,
So that you better understand my position on China and its state owned trading companies, I am sending you in confidence the copyrighted Chapter 2 of my forthcoming book below, The Profits of Genocide. It calls for a boycott by the American consumer of goods manufactured in the Peoples Republic of China. Our government has ,in my view, a naive perspective driven by wishful thinking of what Beijing's future intentions are towards the United States. Perhaps, our government should consider looking out for the interests of Americans first and the Chinese people second, rather than the other way around. This is based on harsh personal experience and almost 9 years of researching China's actions and ignoring their words. Sincerely, Michael B. Hickland Chapter 2- What spawned my interest in China’s state owned trading companies I took a trip to Beijing in the fall of 1994 where a Chinese government representative made me aware of his nation’s great need for antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals produced by American firms. I agreed to try to facilitate this acquisition. China National Chemical Import and Export Corporation (Sinochem) is the PRC’ s largest trading company with revenues exceeding US $10Billion annually. In December of 1994, at my request, my attorney, Gregory J. Ligelis of Robinson & Cole, met with a Sinochem official and officers of their joint-venture (Sinohawk) partner Hawksburn Developments (Overseas) Ltd. It was at this meeting in Sinochem’s London offices that they proposed to Mr. Ligelis that my company would provide US $3Billion in pharmaceuticals to the PRC over a ten year period. It was the assurances given by Sinochem official Gong Min that convinced us to proceed to negotiate the agreement with Sinohawk. Other future pharmaceutical contracts for several other countries were discussed and dismissed without result. After working until April of 1996, at my own expense under our Exclusive Agency Agreement to source, negotiate the lowest price possible and supply the required items, it became clear that despite Sinochem’s promises they would not honor the contract. Furthermore, a Director of Sinochem in a letter to my attorney denied that their joint-venture, SinoHawk (Overseas) Ltd. ever existed. This was in spite of substantial documentary evidence to the contrary. We then sought legal remedies. Sinochem not only tortiously interfered with our agreement causing a breach on Sinohawk’s part, but then refused to fund their joint-venture or to participate in the arbitration and the subsequent United States District Court hearings. The judgment of $18,005,047 plus 6% per annum interest has been uncollectible because we are unable to get jurisdiction over Sinochem in the United States. Hawksburn’s officers, having their own contracts breached, provided us with many documents and anecdotal information concerning a proposed Sinochem industrial park and trade debts owed by Saddam Hussein’s government to China’s state owned company. While we had explained to Sinochem in 1994 that any legal trade with China was supported by the United States government, it is now obvious that the items on my extensive shopping list were destined to be shipped by China to Iraq. My personal financial Armageddon made me realize that I was hardly the first American to be taken in by empty and meaningless Chinese assurances. The White House ignored my pleas for help with this problem. Then came revelations in the news concerning illegal campaign contributions to Bill Clinton/Al Gore. A Chinese weapons dealer meets with the President Clinton in the Oval Office and Al Gore goes to a Buddhist Temple to fundraise. U.S. missile guidance technology is transferred by Loral, Clinton’s largest corporate contributor, and suddenly China has nuclear warheads on accurate missiles aimed at American cities. The Democratic National Committee eventually had to return $2.8 million in illegal contributions the majority of which was funneled through John Huang, Commerce Department appointee with top security clearance. He had originally represented the Riady family, Indonesians with strong business ties to the Chinese Communist Government*. I asked myself “who is minding the store?” Then in 1997 came a 60 Minutes telecast of a story about 88 children, none of whom were beyond the age of five, who had been poisoned in Haiti. Mike Wallace talked to a woman named Rose Israel, among others, who had forced her son to take a sweet tasting syrupy medicine from a company named Pharval, Haiti’s largest pharmaceutical producer. A global investigation was begun by Dr. David Brandling-Bennet of the Pan American Health Organization, World Health Organization in Washington, D.C. In India, Bangladesh and Nigeria hundreds of children had died from an illness that produced the same symptoms. Haiti’s government asked the United States for help. The CDC and the FDA went into action. It was discovered that the cause of their illness was in fact medicines that they were taking. Each unknowingly contained an element called diethylene glycol, used as an industrial solvent or as car anti-freeze. It is extremely toxic, a poison that easily killed the children. Pharval’s head, Mr. Rudolph Boulos, had innocently purchased a substance in massive quantities that resembled and tasted like the harmless pharmaceutical glycerin he believed he was buying. This ingredient that was certified as pharmaceutical glycerin was mixed with the real medicine. Children would take the medicine because the poison made it sweet to taste. When the pathology identified the cause of so many chidren’s death from kidney failure , the FDA started a search for the parties responsible for the mass deaths. The FDA found much more of it ready for shipment in a warehouse in Rotterdam. This distributor to Pharval told them it had bought the substance from a company called Vos in Holland. Vos told the investigators it had purchased the counterfeit glycerin from a German company. The saga continued. The origin of this poison/ counterfeit glycerin was none other than the alleged illegal campaign contributor, The People’s Republic of China. The country that Clinton, Gore and Ruben supported for membership in The WTO and “most favored nation” status for trade with the United States. It seems that Sinochem, China’s largest state owned chemical/trading company, had certified the poison, diethelene glycol, as harmless pharmaceutical glycerin and sold it indiscriminately. The counterfeit glycerin with its low price and Sinochem’s certification as 98% pure as a harmless pharmaceutical ingredient brought about the deaths of so many innocents. To 60 Minutes credit it reported this story and updated it on air on July 11, 1999. It was not an issue the Clinton State Department wanted to talk about. I often wonder why the administration would not seek redress for the Haitian families diplomatically and refused to hold China accountable. I am sure President Clinton had his reasons for protecting China! However, it’s a shame that in spite of recommendations to do so from her special assistant and the Clinton FBI Director, Attorney General Janet Reno refused to appoint a special investigator for the Communist Chinese alleged campaign contributions. So we will never know the truth. It has been said by the current U.S. Attorney General that the lack of cooperation between the CIA and FBI prior to 9/11 was because of a memo from a Reno lieutenant prohibiting intelligence sharing. Others have said this was to protect President Clinton and implied that the CIA had information about Chinese money influencing the U.S. elections for their candidates Bill Clinton and Al Gore. The FDA said Sinochem was the certifier of poison as pharmaceutical glycerin, but not the original manufacturer. When confronted Sinochem pleaded ignorance of the problem and refused to reveal the Chinese company which produced it. Sinochem said when they figured it out it would get back to the FDA. They never did. Nancy Pelosi, the now minority leader of democrats in the House of Representatives, was then critical of the Clinton Administration’s position on China. “Well, the State Department is an arm of the administration, and the administration policy has been very clear on China, and that is that money rules.” One would think that the then First Lady, Hillary Clinton, being a mother and believer in healthcare for everyone, would have taken up the cause of the poisoned children. Alas, it was not to be. The families of Haiti’s poisoned children hired Miami attorney, David Mishael, to bring suit against the parties responsible for the victims poisoning. He told 60 Minutes “You have to understand what this toxin does. Neurologically, this chemical bathes the brain. These children started crawling. They couldn’t even stand up.” Mr. Mishael declared “What is really so difficult-difficult about this for the parents is that the parents fed the poison to their children.” Mr Mishael summed it up in this way “This is the sixth mass tragedy, mass poisoning in the 20th century from diethylene glycol. This shouldn’t have happened. And unfortunately the lives of children were lost. And if that doesn’t move our State Department or move the President- and I know the President is concerned about children’s issues…” “If that doesn’t move this country to determine who the manufacturer was, then I, quite frankly, can’t tell you what will.” To my knowledge, President Clinton did not seek or get the answers and victims’ families have received nothing. At least two books were written about the Clintons taking the benefit of Communist Chinese money and their titles are listed in the Appendix. Is it possible that this was true? Consider the following, it was reported the Clintons charged a large fee to guests spending the night in the White House’s Lincoln bedroom. Also, upon leaving office, it was discovered that the former first couple had taken White House objects with them that were not theirs to take. When this was brought to her attention, Hillary Clinton claimed this to be a mistake in cataloguing. When international fugitive and convicted felon, Marc Rich, as well as a major league drug dealer received Presidential pardons in the last days of the Clinton administration, democratic pundit, Mark Shields, called these actions “indefensible”. It later came out that Rich’s wife became close to the First Lady, making huge campaign donations to the party and to use the words of others “lavishing gifts” on the First Couple. Also revealed was that Hillary’s brother received a $600,000.00 fee for securing the Clinton pardon of the drug kingpin. Once again Senator Hillary Clinton claimed not to know anything about it. Most telling was democratic former White House Chief of Staff, Hamilton Jordan, in describing the Clintons as “grifters”. More important, the Haitian victims’ families received not a penny for their tragedies. That is why I spent 8 years doing research on China’s state owned trading companies! "That is why I spent 8 years doing research on China’s state owned trading
companies! " And this is the best you can come up with!!! And what does this have to do with the cost of Sweet Crude Oil? Or the 200 billion + spent so far in Iraq invasion and occupation? Or the negative job growth over the past 4 years? Or the 45 million Americans with no health care? Or the rising property tax? Or the rising State income tax? Or the growing threat nuclear from North Korea? Or the record deficits? Or the growning tension between US and China? Or the millions of Americans who will soon lose much needed Overtime pay? Or the trillion dollar tax cut given to big US corporations? Or the weak economy? Or the Nation's lose of credibility, respect and allies around the world? What really is important the American People? Let's keep the focus on the record of the current Administration, not the previous Administration. |
