Why is the Military Overwhelmingly Republican?

'Cause if the military were democrats, they'd all be a bunch of bleeding-heart liberal eco-hippies. They'd be more worried about hurting our enemies' poor widdle feelings, than actually doing their job. They'd all be carrying picket signs instead of rifles. They'd be crying in their foxholes, begging for their mommies.

If you don't re-up in the military. As if you had a choice. And if you don't register Rep then they offer you a all expense paid hunting trip with deadeye dick cheney.
Just imagine if Bush or Cheney ever had the guts to serve and got wounded. Guess where the wound would have been? In their butts because they would have been cowering in a hole with their butts in the air. Last edited by goldendog; 07-03-2008 at 09:46 PM. |

I had a discussion with my friends the other day about this issue and we were kind of stumped as to why so many military personal are republican. We decided that gun rights and the predominantly hawkish position of the GOP made it a more favorable candidate to the military.
However what we found funny was that while the military supports the more conservative political party, people in the military benefit from very liberal programs. What I mean to say is that the government has a lot of social programs designed to help those in the military. So essentially socialist policies are common in the military yet they support a more conservative party. Just food for thought.

Where did you get your Doctor of Psychology degree from? You got any facts and/or figures to back that comment up? Any analytical research or published papers in a medical journal?

I think the reason most members of the military are Republicans is accounted for primarily by group psychology. They join because that’s what their conservative social group says they should do, and when in the conservative social group in the majority keeps them within that same sphere. I think that is the biggest reason for the discrepancy. Basically peer pressure. I think the reason conservative ideology is generally associated with the military, and the reason that base already exists, is conservatives generally have two ideals that lend towards military service. Those being the concept of tradition and the concept of authority. Tradition compels them to both act in a traditional manner, and do support traditional things. A nation-state is a construct that depends on tradition, that is current acknowledgement of both it’s existence and history, and by extension the nations “values”. The tradition must be preserved. The concept of authority causes both a willingness, possible even a desire, to both follow and have authority. Authority also couples with other factors and produces the idea that the nation is the ultimate authority and must be preserved.
That’s probably a bit of an esoteric explanation. I hope it makes sense. |
