On Barack Obama's official political website he says...
"Throughout his political career, Barack Obama has been a leader in fighting for open and honest government. As a U.S. Senator, he has spearheaded the effort to clean up Washington in the wake of the Jack Abramoff scandal. In a politically charged election year, Obama acknowledged that corruption was a problem that plagued both political parties. He subsequently enlisted the help of Republican allies to limit lobbyist influence, shine sunlight into the earmarks process and promote open government." When in fact, Barack Obama has either sponsored or co-sponsored legislation to prove just the opposite. Many of Senator Obama's proposed legislation has earmarks burried within, displays personal interest or reflects little loyalty to the pocketbooks of the taxpayers. "In 2006, Barack, along with Senators Hillary Clinton, Edward M. Kennedy, Jim Jeffords, Patrick Leahy and Tom Harkin authored the Standing with Minimum Wage Earners Act of 2006. This bill would change the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1983 by keeping the wage increase for Congressional members at the same pace as the increase of the federal minimum wage." After reading the bill the above paragraph translates to mean: Minimum Wage Earners Act of 2006 was introduced by Clinton and 13 democrats including Obama. Keeping their wage increase tied to the federal minimum wage so that when the min. wage goes up, the pay scale for Congress MUST go up the EXACT PERCENTAGE rate. $5.85 an hour, beginning on the 60th day; $6.55 an hour, beginning 12 months after that; $7.25 an hour, beginning 24 months after the date of enactment of the Standing with Minimum Wage Earners Act of 2006; Minimum wage earners will receive an increase of $1.40 in two years. That equals about a 25% raise in those two years. Under this bill, congress would receive the same PERCENTAGE raise to their incomes. Currently senators earn about $165,000 a year. Currently, a cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) increase takes effect annually (for Congress) unless Congress votes to not accept it. In addition to their salaries, after serving only 5 years Congressmen are eligible for lifetime benefits, including a sizable federal pension, health benefits, and social security benefits. In researching the legislation that Senator Obama has introduced both as a State and US Senator I'm finding that his campaign promises do not align with his record. (Additional examples to be added later.) I was less than thrilled to find this piece of legislation that had clear intent to line the pockets of a Congress that is already receiving annual cost of living adjustments. Every time I watch Obama make a speech I can't help but reflect in my mind what he did to increase the income of himself and his peers first and foremost. Has anyone heard about the proposed legislation I mentioned and what are your thoughts about aligning the Congress to receive the same percentage increase as minimum wage earners on top of their annual cost of living raise?
