Poverty does not indicate acceptance of government aid.

If you can find some statistics that reveal the distribution of federal welfare along racial, and other demographic, lines, then we'll have some steak and potatoes.

That's not correct.

The press release you linked to states - "Per capita spending among states was highest for Louisiana ($16,263). Mississippi was second ($14,516), followed by Alaska ($13,805)". Not "Per capita welfare spending...", but "Per capita spending..."

If you do a little digging as I did, you'll discover something interesting - for the fiscal year (FY) 2004, Mississippi was 17th in per capita spending, Louisiana was 25th. In FY2005, Mississippi was 10th, and Louisiana was 13th. Suddenly in 2006, Louisiana jumps up to first place and Mississippi is 2nd. (The Federal fiscal year runs from October 1st through September 30th of the following year.)

In one fiscal year Louisiana and Mississippi jump from 13th and 10th respectively, to 1st and 2nd. What would cause something like this to occur? What kind of event would cause two states in close geographical proximity to suddenly have a huge increase in the amount of Federal spending in their states? What kind of event would have cause a huge increase in the amount of money spent as "Health and Human Services"?

Here's a hint - it's seven letters, starts with a "K" and ends with an "A", and tore the bejeezus out of the Mississippi Gulf coast and New Orleans in late August of 2005.

The truth, however, as you point out, is that once they've got the votes, they promptly forget their promises and spend all their time serving their true constituency, the wealthiest 1% of Americans. The odd thing is that some voters seem never to realize that they've been had. I can only suppose that this is due to an overexposure to the spewings of Neo-Con mouthpieces like Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.
hey both sides trick their base. Not saying it's right but stuf happens!!!

I lived in Birmingham, Alabama for a few years and came to witness a lot of racism first hand. For a young man who grew up in the midwest, it was quite an eye opener.

Considering how this government performed during Katrina, it amazes me how they could vote for a Republican again.

You realize that Fema was created by Carter, right?

No. But the bigots were proud and certainly felt secure enough to voice their opinions without a second thought.

The differnece between conservative and liberal ideology is very apparent with the difference between the Mississippi floods and Hurricane Katrina.

You don't hear the people in the Midwest complaining and waiting for handouts. These guys are out there fighting to save their homes and towns. You don't see people complaining about levees breaking, you see people saying "well we always knew it could happen and we took the risk"

In Katrina, everybody blamed it on someone else, rather than owning up and fighting to save themselves.

That to me is the difference, not race.

The degree of devastation is not even remotely comparable and completely changes the equation. There is no way to compare the two.

The people in the midwest went to the hardware store for supplies and drove to the levees and the flood plane to do the work.

The Katrina victims couldn't defend their property. They had to evacuate. Afterwards, they couldn't go to the hardware store because it was destroyed with everything else. When you've lost everything - every physical possession - your home - your job - you're in basic survival mode.

Believe me, a good number of those victims were "conservative" and they couldn't do any different than the "liberals". I think if you went there and saw it first hand, you would have a better understanding.
