We swing to the conservative side after a stretch of liberal policies leave us financially reeling and militarily weak, then after a stretch of conservatism we swing back toward more social programs and looking out for the little guy when we start to feel that we are maybe getting a little greedy and uncaring, then back again!

Isn't this what the Barak Obama thing is all about? Bill Clinton voted along the same lines as the Republican Conservative Congress, then Bush 2 has been conservative for 8 years making 16 years of relatively conservative policies, now we are feeling a little uncaring and maybe a little greedy, so we are looking for a socialist leaning candidate. If Barak is elected we will no doubt weaken the military to spend more on social programs, then we will become concerned about our vulnerability and want a conservative in office after him.

Its really quite dizzying!
