Liberal talk radio doesn't work as a genre because liberals do not rely on some well-modulated voice telling them what they should think. We tend to make up our own minds about stuff and don't need to hear our opinions parroted back to us by radio morons like Rush or Hannity.
Now, argue with that if you will, and then we'll discuss my background in radio station programming and the reasons why certain formats work with certain demographic groups and not with others.

No one wants to listen to liberal radio because no one wants to listen to a bunch of left wing crazies whining, yelling and screeching about the rich all day. Or how oil companies are ripping them off. Or whatever news du jour that moveon.org, democraticunderground, or salon.com shoves down their open mouths.

1. There are about twice as many self-identified "conservatives" than "liberals" in the US.
2. Only the far-left think regular media is conservative-biased. Regular liberals believe "liberal bias" is way overstated and acknowledge certain market-related biases, but do not see a need for liberal media. NPR is the closest thing to "liberal media" that liberals want. 3. Liberalism despises "common sense" and "conventional wisdom". Soundbites and opinionated blowhards annoy us. Most of us have a bizarre need to softly defend groups we can't stand when they are unfairly attacked. "Well, that's not quite fair..." and "Well, that's painting with a broad brush." We like long, wordy, explanative stuff better than entertaining stuff that reaffirms our preconceived notions. We're kind of snobby. I have no problem acknowledging that. Better to be a snobby elitist than a control-freak elitist. 4. Liberals want information to interpret according to their values, not constant babbling and regurgitation of what their values are. 5. The younger liberals who are more prone to like to hear a sounding board of similar-minded blowhards... don't listen to the radio! I'd say when you combine all this, it's a no-brainer.

Admitting is the first step to recovery.
And yeah, your analysis was spot on.

Yes. That's the same liberal mainstream media that played the "wright" you tube tape over and over and over and over again. The main liberal mainstream media that played the "bitter" comments over and over and over and over and over again. The same liberal mainstream media that rides on the bus with McCain and sniffs up his every fart and declares it ambrosia, and then -- to maintain this level of access -- fails to report on his flip-flops or his funny, funny rape jokes, or calling his wife the "c-word", or mixing up Shi'ite and Sunni, or consistently talking about Czechoslovakia, as if that country didn't disappear 15 years ago, or any of the 61 and counting reversals on policy he's made since running for president.
Dog GONE it, but you just gotta HATE that "mainstream libruhl media", don't you JUST???

Liberal talk shows are serious because what is going on in this country is serious business. There is also the concern for credibility, which the Right obviously does not care about. Further, to comrehend a complex idea, you have to listen, critically, rather than just laugh at slippery slope slander...But I don't think that is why they aren't successful.
What makes a show a success? Audience. All day, everyday. Which demographic doesn't need their brains while working, thus can listen to a radio show? Which demographic is more educated and tend to have intellectual jobs, thus can't be bothered with radio during work hours? Which demographic has been trained to research, thus will research a topic themselves and form an opinion, rather than have it fed to them by radio, or other mass media sources? That's why they don't work. Liberals are busy solving the world's problems without a radio, while the right is busy paving my street and being brainwashed into thinking that liberals are preventing them from achieving the American dream. LOL at this whole discussion
