Default The N-word

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080717/...jackson_n_word

Black people use the N word so much that I'm sure it slips out at inappropriate times.

And really, what type of self pity do you have to have to refer to your self like that? I don't call myself or other people ignorant... unless I'm online.

your question is best meant for those who use the word. If you know of any here on the forum, please ask them personally... because it is their personal flaw.

Within the african american community the word does not carry such a slur among themselves. I hear it more often than i would imagine. But if i were to use it. i would be seen as some bigot. I don't understand the reason but thats my experience.

It's understandable in my view.

The Turk minority here will refer to eachother with a word that if it came from a non-Turk would be a racial slur. They also make many jokes about themselves in front of Persians and Kurds and others, but if a Persian for example were to make the same joke they wouldn't be able to.

It's understandable anywhere you go no matter who the minority group is, especially if the minority group has suffered historical persection at the hand of the majority.

There's a certain sting that comes from the racial slur if it's by someone other than the Turk (or the black in your case). But when it's said among their own group that sting or that vulgarity doesn't exist, at least not to the same degree.

Not just black people say it anymore. latinos, asians, I've even seen some white people say it without anyone getting offended.

(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) doesnt necessarily mean ignorant. i think its just the evolved word for negro, which basically means black. the connotation can be so negative, however, that its associated with all sorts of bad things.

people who dont use the nword to offend, use it like others use words that arent considered positive but dont necessarily mean to offend. like, (*)(*)(*)(*)(*), punk, chump, etc. it has everything to do with context.

if your friend regularly refers to you as a (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) or something similar, and thats the rapport you have, its typically not a problem. have a stranger say the same thing and theres a difference. the same can be said of positive stuff. if you call your girlfriend, baby, its no problem, but if some random guy says it to her, hes probably crossed a line.

assuming youre not black, if you use the nword as a negative, or to mock others who use the nword, you will offend people. use it in a context that isnt demeaning, and youll probably turn some heads, but wont be judged as harshly. non blacks get away with using the nword all the time, so long as their intentions are in the right place. people can tell.

Yeah, but if you say "I hate myself" once every day, someday you will believe it.

I'm kind of fond of the words "cracker" and "honkey." They both make me chuckle.

Another word that now is used more and more as a negative is the word GAY. I'm gay it's not easy to hear that. I understand that people saying are not refering specifically to me but to have what you are used in that way stinks.
i.e. I think these shoes are gay. This movie is gay. That shirt looks gay on you. What we did last night was really gay.

What are those statements and references saying? They say to me that if it's gay it's bad. It is the negative. Replace the word gay with dumb. I think these shoes are dumb. Gay is a term for what i am society seems to make it acceptable for others to use that term to make a statement for bad or less then good.
