Default The N word

I agree that it is a bad word. No argument there, but i will never understand why some people can use it and others can't. Can some one please explain this to me. I have never heard an explination that satisfies me. Maybe this has already been discused. If so I apoligize for bringing it up again. It just seems to me that black Americans have a double standard on several issues. For instance jokes. I'm a portagee and people tell dumb portagee jokes all the time and I'm not offended.

Hmmm... "portagee".... are you from Hawaii?

I know plenty of people with disabilities who use the term "cripple" of themselves in a way that is derisive of those who without disabilities who use the word in a demeaning way. That doesn't justify my using the word.

If the word is considered bad it should be bad for both sides.

And Whoopi has the freedom to use it on the view with no threat to her life, no threat to her job, and actual defense from many.

I don't know. I can't picture Jeff Foxworthy saying "Where my honkies at?".

It's the portagees who tell the best Portagee jokes! Frank DeLima...

If your friends use "the c word" and you're cool with it - great! You have excellent self-esteem! Nobdy, and I mean absolutely nobody, who works in the disabilities service field gets away with using other than person-first language. It's the industry standard.

I heard a black person explain that it's a "bad word" because of the hurt that it reminds them of. So, if the word brings back painful memories, why would the black people want to use it?
How do you tell a kid that it's a bad word only if some people use it?
It's just more of "seperate but equal", or pure BS. "Your free speech is free only if I say so".

Thats true my my grandfather has a lot of good ones.

I still think theres a double standard. A white person can't even use that word if he's a comedian. I do see many black comedians making fun of whites tho. I know that the joke thing is a little off topic but whats up with that?
