I see your response coming already, so... lets just jaunt on over to US Treasury and check out what the numbers on the national debt were for said fiscal year: Fiscal Year Year Ending National Debt Deficit FY1993 09/30/1993 $4.411488 trillion FY1994 09/30/1994 $4.692749 trillion $281.26 billion FY1995 09/29/1995 $4.973982 trillion $281.23 billion FY1996 09/30/1996 $5.224810 trillion $250.83 billion FY1997 09/30/1997 $5.413146 trillion $188.34 billion FY1998 09/30/1998 $5.526193 trillion $113.05 billion FY1999 09/30/1999 $5.656270 trillion $130.08 billion FY2000 09/29/2000 $5.674178 trillion $17.91 billion FY2001 09/28/2001 $5.807463 trillion $133.29 billion Indeed the deficit was the smallest for any fiscal year in 2000 and this I'll praise him for it. But to say there was ever a surplus is a misnomer and is misleading. |

So far (yeah - statistically invalid) it seems that the debate on how to reduce the rate of increase of government debt is between decreasing social security and cutting back on expensive wars in other people's countries. Can this really reflect what America thinks?
Just in case the full breadth of "expensive wars" makes us think that these costs consist of buying aircraft and tanks and putting soldiers into the field, take a look at the following that demonstate that these horrendous costs are at times highly questionalble or at very best, suspicious: NYT (April 2003): “Halliburton’s government relations director says his company’s former CEO, now the vice president of the United States, has nothing to do with the company getting billions of dollars in federal contracts.” Christian Science Monitor (October 2003) "Yet some key Iraq contracts already were bid secretly, or on a sole-source basis, to companies with strong ties to the Bush administration. These included a $1.39 billion contract to a subsidiary of Halliburton." / "We're overrelying on large umbrella contracts.... Halliburton has a monopoly on the work in oil, and Bechtel has a monopoly on the reconstruction work" I know Republican supporters won't like the source of the worrying list in the link below - too bad - smoke, fire, etc. http://democrats.senate.gov/dpc/dpc-...?doc_name=inv2 Washington Post (November 2005): “Our Defense Department has continued to pay, through pliant contractors, for a flock of Iraqi political exiles as our paid political agents in Iraq. .... A private translation company also known as Operational Support Services, was awarded two contracts worth more than $45 million. .... The Air Force, under pressure from the Pentagon, committed a "gross error" last year when it rushed to sign a no-bid contract for advisers to help plan and implement Iraq's national elections and draft its constitution. Two competing firms filed protests, arguing that they should have been able to bid for the work.” = one company selected; no competing bids requested; $45 million dollar bill. CNN (January 2005): "Nearly $9 billion of money spent on Iraqi reconstruction is unaccounted for because of inefficiencies and bad management .... at one ministry that although 8,206 guards were on the payroll, only 602 guards could be validated." London Book Review: OUCH!! http://www.lrb.co.uk/v27/n13/harr04_.html The ‘financial irregularities’ described in audit reports carried out by agencies of the American government and auditors working for the international community collectively give a detailed insight into the mentality of the American occupation authorities and the way they operated, handing out truckloads of dollars for which neither they nor the recipients felt any need to be accountable. ...... In the first nine months of the occupation, Kellogg, Brown and Root (a Halliburton subsidiary) was allowed a free hand in Iraq: a free hand, for example, to bill the Pentagon without worrying about spending limits or management oversight or paperwork. Millions of dollars’ worth of new equipment disappeared. KBR charged $73 million for motor caravans to house the 101st Airborne Division, twice as much as the army said it would cost to build barracks itself." So tell me again, we are more likely to be better off by reducing benefits to 'underpriveledged persons' than by cutting profits to Halliburton, Bechtal and other multi-billion dollar companies? Hmmmmm .... |

Oh, great! Did you have any thought of refunding the Social Security contributions (peferably with interest) for all those in the under 45 crowd? Or were you just planning on confiscating that for the benefit of a bunch of selfish old geezers?
