I'm sure if we elected someone in favor of limited and scaled down government we could get rid of the deficit. Of course, that will never happen, not with all the scare tactic propaganda this country is swamped with. Authoritarian presidents will never fix the rising national debt, republican or democrat (unfortunately those are the only people we elect).

We need to tighten the belt. I agree in part with the first post. This war and our military might costs a lot. Taxes will have to go up now because of so many things. This war has cost a fortune. It is a shame that the tax cuts can't stay. The reality is that we have spent ourselves into this debt problem.

Sadly, the electorate responds to promises of what they'll get from mommy government more enthusiastically than what they won't. That's why the debt crisis can't be fixed.
This whole rotten system is going to come crashing down simply because the people who want to fix it can't get elected. Get ready for Weimar Republic Part Deux.

Did you read this thread - seriously, I would REALLY like to know. Your response is a McCain mantra that gets rolled out no matter what the facts are.

Contrary to your unsubstantiated view, the evidence that has been provided here - and pretty well documented - is that it is our war machine that most gets us into debt.

Raharu - let's simplify it - who is most likely to want to keep the war machine robust, well oiled, and conquering - Obama or McCain?

McCain is the threat to our debt, Raharu, not Obama. You need to stop watching so much Fox News. It will deprive you in the long run of the ability for individual thought. You will then be forever confined to - Ommmm Ommmm Ommmm.

Democrats rule the house. They can do anything to the budget, and that includes blocking McCain's demands for a bigger defense budget.

Obama would pretty much have free reign. Do you remember the last time that happened? The first years Bush was in office.

I don't feel like finding you a pathetic link that you wont read just to prove to that you can come up with a comeback regardless. If you really think the war increased the debt by any significant amount with respect to the rate it was already increasing, you're wrong. Look it up. The debt has been increasing, perhaps slightly faster now, but what's really happened is that the bush tax cuts decreased the revenues earned - thus creating a deficit. And, of course, now that the tax cuts have finally started paying for themselves, Obama could get elected. He's promised to increase income taxes and capital gains taxes - both something that will only give a short term increase in total tax revenues, and decrease spending in one area while he increases every other.

k I'll go cut myself. You count how many blah's I wrote.
