This is not entirely accurate. The definitions of deviant and norm actually have two definitions. One is statistic deviation and norm which are essentially math terms to which you are referring. The other has to do with social beliefs of what a society believes what is normal.
This is why you are getting controversy of the term. Nobody cares about the statistical part, but the society part is makes people upset.
As far as whether or not its changed. I think it would be fair to say that in the history of this country, talking about sex in an open manner has not occurred until probably the sixties. If you had a chance to see the movie regarding Alfred Kinsey, who did sexual studies in the 40'w and 50's, you can see that people were not comfortable regarding open information about sex---even as an academic study . Masters and Johnson came along in the 1970's and educated people to recognize that sex itself is a very normal act. There was the concept that all sex was basically sinful in nature.
You still have some religions who believe that the only acceptable sex is for procreation and everything else is perverted.
I think it would be fair to say that attitudes have changed, but I really don't know if behavior actually changed or being more open about discussing it is really the difference. Howard Stern or Dr Ruth wouldn't have existed in the 20's-30's.
