Icon14 Could Cascadia Survive?

So here's what Cascadia is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascadi...ence_movement)

I've a few questions.

1. Could it survive without the USA? This region produces 450 billion in goods.

2. Why shouldn't these specified states, provinces break from it's country, & control their own governments & exports. Because it's obvious to this region that they're ignored by their government, and are only used for their resources.

3. What are your thoughts about some states breaking off, and forming their own country?

4. Is it even possible that it would happen? The government approving of a secession?

It could certainly survive without he U.S. I'm not sure about a hostile U.S., but it could survive otherwise.

I'm not sure if "shouldn't" is the operative word here, but the word "wouldn't" can be addressed by the word "inertia". THere is simply not enough sentiment here for breaking away, and it would take something cataclysmic to provide such sentiment.

If we broke away, I cold handle it. If we didn't, likewise. I think it would be great if we weren't controlled so much by the voting block in the south, but I don't think it is worth bloodshed.

Not very. I fear whatever events might precipitate such a split more than I do the continuance of the status quo at this point.

Political motivations for the secession and autonomy moements
deal mostly with perceived shared Cascadian

POLITICAL CULTURE, VALUES, LANGUAGE DIALECT, HISTORY, &
INTERESTS, with which the eastern federal governments are
accused of ignoring and being out of touch.
From Wiki

I have to agree. The Pacific Northwest is a vast difference from the East. It's totally ignored, and always criticized for being different.

Values of assisted suicide(Death With Dignity), marijuana control, political & religious beliefs differ greatly from the rest of the country.

This region generates 450 billion dollars in goods a year. I live here, I'm not financial analyst, but I can (*)(*)(*)(*) sure tell you that money isn't spent in this region. It's shipped to Southern California, and the East/South. Why should this region continue to break it's back, and get nothing in return from the government.
You think an area making 450 billion dollars would have a decent school system, and more than 5 police in the streets, but that's not true. This is the federal governments fault. The Federal government uses the resources provided by this region, and gives nothing of significance back in return.

I'm for secession from the US. It's far from this regions interests to continue being apart of the United States, and always has.

They'd never make it.

1) The United States would not allow it.
1a) ...which means that militarily, there's no way they'd survive.
2) They depend on the United States too much, through things like subsidation, social services, etc.

Yea, this area ONLY depends on social security, etc...because the government robs this region of the goods it produces, and gives nothing back.

This region of Cascadia would hold only 15 million people, which would generate 450 BILLION DOLLARS IN GOODS. The federal government needs the Pacific Northwest WAY more than the Pacific Northwest needs the federal government.

What's the population swing in "Cascadia?" Would your population continue to grow, when all the able-bodied workers grow too old to work? I could see where your precious $450B economy would come crashing down, if not held within such a delicate balance.

For instance, the Midwest would never survive a secession, because our population is not being refreshed fast enough with able bodied people. St. Louis itself, only recently started an upswing of immigration. We've been stagnant because our populace has been getting older and older, and that affects things like income tax, business tax, etc.

Umm..people live and people die. To say a country wouldn't survive because of it's population age is the least of it's worries. There will always be people turning 18 years old. There will always be immigrants, like there is now. Except this country and economy will take care of it's aging population, instead of screwing them like the U.S. does.

I don't think the rest of the country would allow it. As much as the republican idealists complain about our policies up here, they depend too much on our resources. That combined with the fact that last time there was an attempt at succession it resulted in a horrible war that left far too many Americans dead leads me to believe that the people would never agree to let it happen.

First off, not everybody in Washington shares you "values". If these were the values of Cascadia, the Eastern half of washington and all of Idaho would secede from Cascadia.

That said, I will agree that we are ignored by the government as a whole.
