I'm an organ donor. I'll be donating everything, all my organs, my corneas, muscle, arteries, bone, skin, etc.

I honestly don't care how much money the hospital or doctors make off me, as long as I save the lives of a deserving few, it doesn't bother me in the least.

Agreed. We should incentivize organ donation in some manner. It's simply wasteful that so many people are dying or spending years on transplant waiting lists, while millions of healthy organs get cremated or embalmed every year. If you have a religious or moral problem with it, fine -- but most people don't become donors for the same reasons most don't make wills -- apathy and an unwillingness to think about their own mortality.

I'd consider an "opt out" system rather than the current "opt in". When you get your driver's license, the default would be that you become an organ donor. This will be strongly highlighted on the application and in person, and you will always have the option to decline or (later) stop being listed as a donor. That way apathy works in favor of society, not against it. But the opt-out feature would have to be clearly and loudly pointed out, and people should be able to exercise that option in private.

For the rest:

1. Organs don't "spoil" in a living body unless there are other health issues -- and those issues generally mean your organs aren't suitable for transplant anyway. You don't need to worry about hospitals offing you to keep your organs fresh.

2. The "insure organ donors" argument just fails. In a national health care system you're already insured, and in a private health care system it's not the government's business either way.

I'm an organ donor.

If I'm uninsured, despite my employment, because the government deems my life worthless, why should I die, and put hundreds of thousands of dollars into their pockets, while receiving nothing in return, before, and after I die?

ignorance is bliss for you isn't it?
Then you and I agree, why should you give the bums anything at all?

Interesting topic. And I share your pessimism. That's why I am not a donor. I don't want any second thoughts about saving my life. Better save my life so you can charge me, cuz you ain't gettin' my organs!

There has to be some sort of cost involved for the recipient of the organ. Otherwise who pays for the Dr removing the organ from the donor, who pays for the transport/storage of the organ?
My wife and I are both donors. She is also a recipient. She received a new ACL that was cadaver tissue.
If no one signs up as a donor, what are all the people on the waiting lists going to do?

Well, no. Because I didn't always have health insurance. And even when I do now, it makes me sick that hospitals and doctors receive organs for free, which they then go and charge hundreds of thousands of dollars to the patient. Either way, it's a win win for them, AT NO COST.
I would have a different point of view if the greatest country in the world(USA) had a better health care system than it does now. It doesn't. This health care system is about making money for hospitals and doctors, not about keeping people healthy because it's for the good of the nation.

Well, for me. It's more about not insuring the organs that you're removing from the dead body, before the person died. Not everyone in this country has health insurance. That is because the government feels their health isn't worth spending money on. That being said. They'll take your organs when you die, and make hundreds of thousands of dollars off them, by charging the next person receiving them.

Just doesn't sit with me very well.

The government doesn't want to insure your health, but they sure want your organs when you die. They don't want to help you take care of them while your alive, but they want the BIG $$ when you die.

The government wins on both sides. They spend no time or money helping you stay healthy, and when you die, they make hundreds of thousands of dollars, at a cost of very very little.

Just not fair for people.
What do I care what they do I am already dead. My organs are in use by others that is a good thing and they are hopfully doing well.

actually, in europe they had a plan to get more donors on the list. Everyone who donates organs, gets free health care insurance.

The reason they did this is because, in essence they don't want to pay people for organs (that would be immoral).

but it is a pretty (*)(*)(*)(*) good idea.
