Default So The Way I see It...

Apparently people in the US are fat because they are poor, and poor people eat alot of cheap food, which is loaded with fat, and so they end up as big as houses.

The solution could be to raise the minimum wage, then people will be able to afford healthy food, and they won't get fat, and America will not be the worlds fattest nation anymore.

Even by as little as $10 a week could make all the difference and it wouldn't be that hard...

Makes sense to me, ya'll.

Of course, it doesn't make sense at all ... raising the minimum wage raises the wage floor. Subsequently the cost of food goes up because of the increase in labor costs.

By the way, your premise is false. Unquestionably, poor people eat more starches ... but, like all the other Americans, if they would get off their ass, they wouldn't have weight problems.

Oh I know that if people got off their butts and did a little excerise they wouldn't be so fat.
I'm just going by what some people have said about fat people eating bad food because it's cheaper. Paying them more seems like a solution to me.

But you can't pay more without driving the cost of food up more than the raise.

Why would the cost of food go up just because people are being paid a little more?
Food goes up regardless of whether someone gets a payrise.

Because the cost of labor goes up -- not only at the lowest level, but at all levels. Higher labor cost, higher product cost. (That is one of the primary reasons food costs rise).

Almost as if the rich hold the trump cards in the market- no matter what you do, they have the final say.

Course thats bollocks, and only organised labour and such non-market measures as the minimum wage can counter-act that affect. In market ideas though, an increased minimum wage should open up the door for less greedy owners to get more of a market share- as unlikely as that is, that is the market argument thats trotted out at more convenient times...

I'm fairly sure that doesn't happen over here...so whats the difference between your country and mine?

I guarantee it happens .... your producers don't just absorb those raises, they pass them on to the consumer via higher prices. The grocer doesn't absorb those increased labor costs. He passes it on to the consumer via higher prices.
