Default Democrats to “Drain the Swamp”

Quote:
DEMOCRATIC PROMISE #79: “Drain the Swamp”

Promise: “In an election in which exit polls identified corruption as the No. 1 voting issue and Washington’s biggest corruption scandal involved lobbying, Democrats won in part by promising to curtail K Street’s excesses. Pelosi has said her first act as Speaker of the House in January will be to pass new rules limiting contact between lobbyists and lawmakers.”

H.R.1204

2/27/2007--Introduced.

527 Transparency Act of 2007 - Amends the Internal Revenue Code to revise disclosure requirements for tax-exempt political organizations (527 organizations) to require monthly reporting of contributions and expenditures. Imposes a penalty tax on political organizations that fail to meet disclosure requirements. Denies a gift tax exclusion for donations to political organizations that fail to meet disclosure requirements.

Requires political organizations to file disclosure reports simultaneously with the Secretary of the Treasury and the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

Introduced on Feb 27, 2007.

Feb 27, 2007: Referred to the Committee on Ways and Means, and in addition to the Committee on House Administration, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.

And there it expired, you can always tell the ones that are going nowhere, because like a carton of milk, they come with Pelosi's own expiration date "for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker".

Man this would have been a good one. It would have required full disclosure of the "swiftboaters" or take a penalty to their tax exempt status. It would be far more difficult for those annoying attack ads on TV, then have the candidate step back and say they had nothing to do with it, one more drain plug for the swamp. But, Pelosi and the Tuna Boat gang just strung it up in committee till it turned into rotted paper.
