I think the threshold is pretty simple, a country cannot be socialist if it still has a circulating currency. Socialist society cannot economically work it is distorted by a medium of circulation, as opposed to a measure of value.

I think alot of the angst directed at socialist is the result of lots of misunderstanding, cultural or otherwise. |

you should run for president quaile, this thread is enlighning. im no good at articulation, so i root for anarchism, i just want to be my own entitie, have a small farm, mabye trade a few things, dont need the government to keep me from killing or being killed, dont need the government to school me , or take my earnings...
i guess it comes down to respecting all life (well stick with human for now, then move on to other animals) if workers were respected and given a decent wage, yea.

Of course it is, But we still havent TOTALLY stripped all the social safety nets from underneath the people who may need them the most - ie the poor and middle classes.
We have though sold the bulk of our state owned assets - namely power grids, water, transport etc. Until of course something happens - THEN THE PRIVATE CORPORATION want hand outs and legislation assistance in order to continue. Look in the USA a the the moment - the amount of money being funneled from the tax payer to the failing financial sector and inefficient Private tyranical corporate structure is astonishing. What sort of capitalism is this? One that privatises profit and power and socialises the risk and losses. Thats a selective form of centralised unaccountable corporate socialism |

Capitalism is capitalism Foolosophy, it's still the same economic basis for society. It's just that in history Europe (and America etc) industrialized before Africa or the 'third world', so the 'first world' has a comparative advantage and can afford (because of their head start) to pay their workers more, give them more social services and welfare etc.
Just because workers have it better here in America, it just means the suffering is worse in the third world, given that capitalism is a global system and global market. |

The Big Corporations dont want market desciplines and capitalist ideals applied to them - they want protectionism and a sort of agreed cartel structure . The USA is certianly NOT an example of a capitalist system THE USA is also NOT an example of a democratic nation. There is a interconnected linkage between these two facts Last edited by Foolosophy; 08-02-2008 at 06:18 AM. |
