Here's a little tidbit that might bring them back...
The words are written by Frances Scott Key while he was a lawyer negotiating the release of an American prisoner on board a British ship which was bombarding the American fortifications. The melody, on the other hand, is quite something else. It was a popular drinking song of the British. That kind of puts things in perspective now doesn't it? Imagine if you will, a tavern crowded with drunk brits singing to the top of their lungs. It explains a lot too:
I'll keep it thank you. It's served us well.

I agree, AMerica the Besutiful fits as a national anthem. THe star spangled banner is beautiful, but it is difficult for the average american to sing it well (more people think they can sing it than can really sound good). I'm lucky if i can HUM it. I really would like to be able to join others in singing the National anthem.
Willie Nelson and Ray CHarles both have heart lifting versions of AMerica the beutiful. Kate Smith was about the only good version of The star spangled banner i've ever heard, even from singers i enjoy. I think the SSB was written as a poem, and senax is probably right that it was turned into a song by people who had enuogh to drink. Maybe even i could sing it if i was drunk enough! DOes the star spangled banner even mention the word AMerica? |

America! America!
God shed his grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea. Well, I guess that puts an end to that. God isn't mentioned in The Star Spangled Banner until the fourth stanza. In my whole life, I've never heard anything beyond the first stanza sung. I don't think we will change it. Too many people are emotionally attached to it, including me.
