The Republican National Convention is coming up fast, the VP short lists have been made shorter and word coming out of the McCain campaign indicates advisor’s are are seriously considering both former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and former Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Lieberman — both of whom favor abortion rights.
HOLY (*)(*)(*)(*)!!! I mean, how progressive for the Republican Party to consider more than just one political issue in choosing a person for their Vice Presidential candidate. But not everyone, as you can imagine, sees these potential running mates as a step forward, quite the opposite. In fact, in an apocalyptic prediction for the Republican Party, bloated pill head Rush Limbaugh has warned Arizona senator John McCain over picking a pro-choice running mate saying doing so “would ensure a GOP defeat, and damage the party’s brand for years to come.” adding it “could devastate the Republican Party”. Well maybe its time for the Grand Old Party to do a little house cleaning. Perhaps sweeping out all the ultra conservative Evangelicals would not be such a bad thing. Oh I know, the Republican party base is Evangelicals, they cant win without Evangelicals. Well that may be so, but I’m not concerned about who wins and loses the presidency this time around. With candidates so similar as McBama, I am more concerned about changing the status quo. Its already been moved a bit on the Democrats side with the nomination of the first African American in history. Now its time for the Republicans to contribute and move our country even closer to the promise of its ideals. John McCain picking a Pro-Choice running mate may force the religious right out of the Republican party, and if so good riddance. Oh they will (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) and complain and talk about taking back the party but it is time for the Republicans to shake themselves free of these one issue voters once and for all. Its time for the influence of conservative religious doctrine to wain and a more pragmatic conservatism to take hold. There is nothing wrong with being conservative but throw in the inflexibility of religious doctrine and there is no room at all for progress, collaboration and growth. Rush is right in that picking a Pro-Choice running mate could devastate the party but he’s wrong about it being damaged for years to come. Only Rush’s religious right wing conservative movement will be damaged, thrown out of the Republican Party, thier influence gone. That is what Rush is really saying. Not that the Republicans will loose but his band of religious hypocrites will loose their place among the powerful. JP @ August 21, 2008
