to actually destroy a democracy...
lack of legitimacy in ruling parties brought on by one of the following: closed systems that deny voice to many groups, failure of the ruling parties to address concerns of the masses over several election cycles with no populist politicians in sight, or apathy and cynicism of the masses hitting a boiling point where the people no longer see the democratic system as valid.

Of course most of these are unlikely to occur in a stabilized democracy as the ruling parties will almost always eventually address the concerns of the public at some point or be replaced by ones who will- that's exactly what makes democracy so immune to revolution.

Of course a very undereducated and consumeristic population like ours... could possibly make bizarre and conflicting demands that are impossible to meet and thus lead to a loss of legitimacy by default... It is possible. But I'm cautiously optimisitic that we'll figure things out.
