I agree with apathy, but I would also add a controlled media. The media controls what the majority of the population knows and doesnt know and sets the general atmosphere of a country.

nowadays it isn't the apathy that is a threat to democracy. It's a lack of money.

Someone can be the best presidential candidate, have the best plans, but without money one cannot get that message across.

You will never see a middle or lower class person running for presidency. That's a serious flaw in democracy as we know it.
