My opinion of the book
I just finished the book as well. I think it was very compelling......sourced well with dates, times, several sources for each event, etc. Some of the quotes of Kerry's I had never seen before.....like the one in the forward of the book that slammed the U.S. and had the pictures of the upside-down American flag on it. And the main thing I got from the book is that all these guys who served alongside Kerry did NOT believe he had...or has.....leadership qualities. They couldn't depend on him....or trust him. In fact, they were glad he was leaving when he managed to get his 3 Purple Hearts in just less than 4 months.
But the thing that concerns me the most is his anti-war activities after he returned home. He identified himself with guys who lied about their service....like Al Hubbard....who it turns out wasn't even in combat, but claimed he was. In fact, he wasn't a lot of things he claimed he was. And even after Kerry discovered this man was a liar, he still associated with him in the anti-war organization. He associated himself with the guys who made up stories about atrocities. ...and was their spokesman, even though he later admitted he never personally saw any. He went to Paris and met with the enemy while the war was still going on...and even though he had no authority to do so. He allowed himself to be used by the North Vietnamese. He blamed the war on Republican Richard Nixon....always referring to it as "Nixon's War"...and NEVER mentioning the fact that it was his hero, JFK and Democrat President Lyndon B. Johnson who escalated the war and even sent him. And he never gave Nixon any credit for being the first of those presidents for immediately beginning the draw-down of troops..until he brought them all home in 1973. Kerry claims to have volunteered for Vietnam....but his records show he got into the Reserves trying to avoid having to go to Vietnam. Unfortunately for John Kerry, his unit got activated 5 months after he joined them.
IMO, the book showed us the lack of character and integrity that John Kerry had then.....and still lacks today. It showed us how he's a political opportunist who believes one way when a Republican administration is in power.....and just the opposite when a Democrat administration is in power. Just as they couldn't trust him back then......we cannot and should not trust him now as Commander-In-Chief.
