You are right. I was aiming this at the people that claim that Freddie and Fanny are an example of why the government is needed. My point is that, at the same time that the government is needed to avert crisis, it is also their fault that this crisis is possible.

In fact, the great depression was caused by the politically motivated attempt to stave off a recession in Great Britain soon after the Fed was created.
They succeeded in holding off the recession for a while and caused a depression as a direct result. We still haven't learned.

I tend to agree which is why we won't hear McCain or Obama talk about national debt...

Because if FM and FM were not bailed out there would be economical turmoil around the world.

We also need to keep the government from giving out money to create super companies like Freddie and Fannie. A lot of people don't realize that they were originally privately owned, but heavily funded by the government, thus making them grow to their current size and making it so that if they fail, they drag down the whole economy.

Way to go big government!
Early on the banks only had so much money to loan, so along came the idea that if someone else bought some of those loans and their future income, this would release money back to the banks, thereby giving them more money to loan, thereby allowing more people to buy homes. It was hoped at the time that those buying these loans would be the private sector, but this did not happen. So eventually the government got involved and created the $5 trillion gorilla we have today.

We seem as a culture in the USA to lack patience...we want most everything now even when we cannot afford it. Therefore we create all sorts of mechanisms to resolve our lack of patience; no interest down, no payments for six months, ARM loans, no document loans, government intervention loans and backing, etc. etc. etc. From this we feed our gluttonous consumption of everything, but it seems to me this type of system is mostly built upon smoke and mirrors...
