On wind you can read "Wind Power" by Paul Gipe, he's a good guy and has been in the industry for decades.

Then like I said before transmission only gets you so far, if you know anything about electricity then you should have an elementary understanding of resistance. Some areas that need large amounts of electricity don't have enough wind to sustain their needs even at the household level.

Pull a wind atlas up on line and you can see that for yourself, Wind Turbines need between 15- 34 mph to begin generating energy and 15 mph doesn't give you half of the turbines capacity. Then it has to be a steady wind. Is it blowing like that at your house 24/7?

There continue to be accusations that Pickens stands to profit from his plan but it is my understanding that he has divested himself of all energy investments. This is such a "SO WHAT". Who do you think is going to invest money in Alternative Energy? If it Al Gore is it better than T. Boone Pickens or Dick Cheney and Haliburton?

You've never been to Oklahoma or West Texas or the rest of the plains states, have you? See out in those parts, everyone knows that if the wind stops blowing, get your a$$ in the tornado shelter. Because right before one it the ONLY time it stops blowing.

A small utility-scale wind turbine with a 50 meter rotor diameter produces 2,200 MWh with a minimum average wind speed of 13 mph (6 m/s). Take a look at this map.



Anywhere that you see orange, pink, purple, blue or red, the wind speeds exceed the necessary requirements for generation. The great plains are ideal, and the land area suitable is vast.

I think you underestimate the potential.

But is that a reason not to use what is available?

Neither of these is going to provide ALL of the energy we need. But they can provide enough to make an enormous dent in the total.

Also, you don't seem to be looking at the non-traditional solar systems:



400 MWe is pretty durned big.

Standard PV cells don't hold a candle to the potential of these beasts.

And, you can also include photovoltaic shingles:



500 Ft² provides 3 Kw, and most houses usually have at least twice that amount on south or west facing aspects.

No I don't. I understand the demand the system requires and have been involved in a project to bring wind to the California Coast. The California Coastal Commission is against Turbines in the coastal view shed. I live on the coast and the wind speeds are not above 30 mph all the time.


Do the math, I'm not going to run this all over again. When you do the numbers and equate the costs add the demand of another 100 million people in the next 30 years to your equation. And yes I have been thru North Texas a few times.

And there is a VERY BIG difference between capacity and actual energy output. Solar 2 has a capacity of 400 mgw which means it can but does not always produce that energy. It might only produce peak 25% of the time if it's lucky.

One large paper manufacturing plant needs 300 megawatts of energy constant, NOT SOMETIMES.

His plan does fail on some counts. While he points out that CNG is currently cheap and abundant it won't be cheap if we increase demand. He does point out that the real future of personal transportation will be hydrogen fuel cells but fails to address that hydrogen is currently obtained from natural gas and we need to obtain it from water which will take nuclear power plants, a lot of nuclear power plants, if we are going to make the transition. Yes, wind and solar are good sources of energy but the current estimate is that if fully exploited it will only satisfy 10% of current demand and won't do anything related to the future demands required for hydrogen fuel cell cars.

Have you seen the California Hydrogen Highway yet? Look it up, you'd like it too.

On CNG the thing that is just stupid is that we use it in power plants and factories then it is also pumped back into the oil wells in which it came. The reason for the new Alaska NG Pipeline. We can and should use it.

I figured to stop building dirty coal plants we should set a mark of 500 Nuclear Power Plants like Palo Verde, which happens to use treated sewage for cooling water. The sewage comes from Phoenix, Arizona.
