Default Do republicans lie....

Do republicans lie purposely to deceive, is it a clever propagandist device? John McCain and Sarah Palin engaged in lies over and over this past week. McCain about Obama's tax policy and who it would impact and Palin about her support for the bridge to nowhere.

Contrast this with Bush and Cheney, they repeated lie after lie about Iraq and WMDs. It is an interesting tactic as most people watching are not fact checking, so even when the lie is repeated over and over again, few are aware of the actual situation. Statistically lying becomes a political tool that distorts issues and confuse voters.

This is where media needs to say they are doing it again.

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." Joseph Goebbels

Both sides lie, obviously. I am not going to say the Dems don't lie when they do on occasion, just like the Cons lie.

I don't agree. I would have to see some examples that are as clear as the recent McCain/Palin lies. I think there is a cynicism scale that dilutes our values. Jedediah Purdy did a good analysis of that sentiment in "For Common Things."

A vote for McCain/Palin is a vote against the fundamental principle of America, the right of the individual to lead their life privately without the government interfering.

The better question is do politicians lie.

If their lips are moving, they are lying. You should know this by now!

I can't think of anything the Dems have lied about, but that doesn't mean they haven't lied. Both sides will lie, it is how they get votes.

Are we asking for recent lies from Obama/ Biden?
"I argued for years that we need to move from a 'Musharraf policy' to a 'Pakistan policy.' "
"Joe Biden brought Republicans and Democrats together to pass the 1994 crime bill, putting 100,000 cops on the streets and starting an eight-year drop in crime across the country."
"The average American family" saw income rise $7,500 under Bill Clinton and decline $2,000 under George Bush.

This is not to take anything away from the noise from the Republicans, but it's inconceivable to me that anyone could seriously think that one of the two major party candidates isn't lying.
They all lie. They're *politicians*.

They don't really lie like the republicans, but they use suggestive language. Wich is almost as bad.

You might call the Democrats trying to put the blame on Bush for poor response to Katrina, that, since they were the local and state government. I can pay out Bush for that - but the dems can't.

I'm not Clintons number one fan, but that one is true.

Of course they lie. And they distort.
That's how politics works because too many people are unable to read between the lines.
People know they're being lied to but usually downplay the lies of their "team". It's been shown in studies that people do this subconsciously.
It's a basic human psychological trait to have double standards based on group affiliation, so it works.

I personally don't think the lies are all that important really, so long as people look into what is behind and between them. But they don't.
Instead most people either take the lies as truth or just make a big deal about the lies without analyzing what is behind or between them. The latter is foolish since there is no way you are going to be able to find a candidate who doesn't lie or at least distort- so there's no point in keeping count!
We spend more time analyzing the lies than analyzing the truth.
Lies thus serve a function of keeping us away from policy and hard issues and in the realm of superficial crap.
