The problem was, allowing secession in that instance would have meant allowing a whole bunch of Americans to be turned back into slaves. Going to war to prevent secession doesn't seem reasonable, but going to war to keep Americans from being slaves, that's more worthwhile, I think.
I realize that the case can be made that the war wasn't really fought to end slavery, but rather to maintain the federal government's authority over the southern economy. And that's probably true as well. But the war did end the threat of slavery and thus was worth fighting. Secession was actually a secondary issue, in my opinion. In Cascadia, we'll no doubt start extending emancipation to sasquatch, dolphins and possibly unicorns. So there's no issue of Americans being prevented from their constitutional rights. It's unlikely the union will split, there is too much interstate trade. If there was another Civil War maybe we'll come out like Rome and have our real glory years! Republic to Empire!!! Woohoo!!!!!!

I'd love to do that, but at some point we have to leave the idiots behind. Of course, those same idiots will likely want to murder us if we dare to leave them to support themselves in their socialist "paradise" - but so be it. We'll be capable of defending ourselves.
