Default Educational requirements for voting

A question for you. Do you think the US would be a better place if there were educational requirements for voting? Sure, some people would be less free and a lot of people would be angry. Then again who knows with this level of voter apathy if they would be angry. But, would it be better for them? Basically, it comes down to the freedom or security argument, except security is replaced with happiness. Could this be a slippery slope towards giving more power to less people? Should we abandon some rights for some people in order to make the US better for every person?

My answer to these questions is yes. However, the real question is if it is better for everyone, is it the right thing to do it? Freedom or happiness? I'm not sure. And no, I'm not a communist. Well, maybe a little. Just looking for opinions and try to keep the personal attacks down, please.

You have to take a basic knowledge test to get a drivers license, but complete ignorance about the constitution is OK to vote. This is an appalling deficiency of the graduation requirements of learning some civic responsibility. This should be part of middle school not for acquiring a high school diploma.

good post, I say yes, question is education in which field? - knowledge of Jewish Holocaust or biography of Bill Clinton? I believe any political education on non democratic mainstream media is no different then teletubies. I like better the idea of "negative voting" someone posted it here today

Actually i think a bachelor in science would suffice. Common, everyone shoul be able to get a bachelor in science. And it teaches you a bit about being critical of things you hear.

as for what education? any would suffice in case of a bachelor in science.

But actually, one of the finer points i think needs to be discussed, is that, a democracy tends to want to have influence in any aspect of life. Even when people know nothing about the subject.

Take for example, abortion. Half of the people against abortion havn't the faintest clue about the procedure. I say that decissions which come in a very specific and specialized field need to be taken by those experts. In case of abortion, it's the medical practioners, the ethics and perhaps priests.

We do not need to decide everything, and we certainly have no clue of all subjects and because of that we shouldn't want to control all those subjects.
