Default U.S. foreign policy - will it ever be non-"gung-ho"?

Hi all - I'm a first-timer here - looks like a great forum!

Anyway, I'm from New Zealand and have a few comments about US foreign policy. I really, really wish it wasn't so "gung-ho". You know, the crashing-in-through-the-saloon-door kind of approach favoured by Bush and co. (and McCain and Palin by the look of things.... ).

In the age of nukes, this kind of approach is *really, really dangerous*. This planned Polish missile base makes me scared. It is the Cuba missile crisis in reverse. If McCain gets in (and the crisis escalates), can anyone see him swallowing his pride and scrapping that base? I sure can't....

Anyway, on that sad note, it's good to be here.... Now, having made my appearance, I'm off to bed See you again soon!

The US foreign policy of imperialism and interventionism is not likely to change as long as either the Democrats or Republicans control our government. Both of these parties have endorsed this foreign policy for decades.

well the main difference is. Americans generally think that the rest of the world is to bureaucratic and needs to take more action. In their mind, they already waited too long with the invasion of iraq and a couple of other countries.

So it's not hard to see that if america sees the rest of the world as Bureaucratic, that the rest of the world sees america as Gung-ho.

Simple answer? No.

Unless Obama gets in, anyway. And that's what half of you are afraid of.

Good answers, all!

Heh... as a slight aside, I had to laugh when I saw this page about Palin's husband being subpoena'd -

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080912/...in_troopergate

I wasn't laughing about the subpoena, but about this -

"Let's just get the facts on the table," said Huggins, who appeared in camouflage pants to vote during a break from moose hunting.

Heh, those Alaskans seem to "have it in" for moose....

I respectfully disagree. Obama has in the past reflected how it might be necessary to extend the WOT into Pakistan,Source which is why he is so far silent on the controversy regarding Bush's incursions into that country, and both he and Biden have talked about intervening in Darfur, Source with military force if necessary.

No matter who you vote for, there will be more wars. That's the situation, no presidential candidate can realistically expect that the U.S. can go back to where we were foreign policy wise pre-Bush.
