Default U.S. Paying Iraqi insurgents not to harm Americans WOW what a way to win

WOW. I pulled this right on the top of this web site. so in other words US military came up with a brilliant idea to re-accomplish the mission in Iraq by paying the enemy to stop fighting. I wonder how long that will last

Quote:
TIKRIT, Iraq (AFP) - The violence in executed dictator Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit has drastically declined, but the US military is concerned for the hard-won stability.

In his modest office at Camp Speicher, the sprawling US military base here, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Hauerwas is pleased with the American strategy of buying loyalty from former Sunni insurgents to reduce attacks.

However, from October the Sahwa members, or former Sunni insurgents, will be transfered to the payroll of the Shiite-dominated Baghdad government in a phased manner. The total Sahwa strength nationwide is estimated at 100,000.

The US is hoping that the change in paymasters will not upset the delicate balance and reverse security gains achieved in the past year. Some 7,000 Sahwa members are deployed in the Salaheddin province, of which Tikrit is the capital.

When I was serving in Vietnam I asked an ARVN Lt if the Vietnamese would quit fighting if the US gave every adult $27K/yr (the amount we were spending on the war at that time) and he said, Oh hell yes we'd all quit fighting." I don't know if that would have actually applied to an NVA soldier but it probably would have. Typically "buying peace" is a lot cheaper than paying for a war.
