Communism never developed becasue its fundamentaly flawed. You can't develope a system that takes away everyones rights and abdicates them to the government, ever heard of free-will?

Marx's political philosophy was pure idealism.
I think most modern looks at Marx focus on his theoretical works, as those are the items of his that still hold clout.
Where economic determinism and historical dialectism are seen as a bit too simplistic today (thanks to those who have contributed to the base of knowledge, standing on the shoulders of Marx), I think his theories on the "ideology of the ruling class" are quite useful today.
Conservative populism is pretty much exactly that!
