This ENTIRE thread was created on a completely false premise. You are making the assumption that Democratic policy trying to increase home-ownership in the lower class is the reason for this economic crisis. The truth is, that while democrats HAVE always pushed for more housing opportunities for the poor, the poor are NOT the cause of this crisis, as much as the free market GOP would like to deflect the blame in that direction.
Guess what, far more money has been lost and more corruption has happened in the middle and upper tier of the housing market . Far more foreclosures are happening in mini mansions being built, and subprime loans given out to families that can't afford them. The democratic bills you spoke of were designed to give people with low income the opportunity to get a low income loan to buy a low income house. MOST of those people DO pay those mortgages, on time with no trouble. Right now, the people being foreclosed on are middle class and rich folks that have middle and upperclass incomes, but homes that far exceed their levels of income. They took loans for too much money, and now can't pay them. THATS THE BANKS FAULT, NOT THE GOVERNMENTS FAULT. The GOP wanted that free market where the banks could lend to anyone. They've gotten their wish. Banks felt that it was ok to give loans to these people, because even if they couldn't pay them, the bank would foreclose and end up with a house that was more valuable when they first gave the loan. The reality is that the housing market busted, and now the banks have a house thats worth a fraction of when they first lent on it. Basically, sleazy, greedy banking practice is now biting the banks in the butt. Now, we ARE seeing poor people being thrown out into the streets, but once again, in many cases its not their fault, its the fault of their property owners. Property owners bought too much, too fast, and couldn't maintain their level of income equal to their level of greed, so now, despite the fact that their renters ARE paying their rent on time, the property owners are being foreclosed on, and everyone is getting kicked out to the streets. This is a GREED FIRST problem, and a government INACTION problem second, and a government policy problem 3rd. NOT the other way around. |

It took me awhile to go thru all of the information. There is more than enough blame to go around. Most of all, the Republicans didn't push hard enough for regulation. Having said that, if you get govt money, you get the massive regulations that go with it. If you do not get govt money, minimal regulation. Yes, I beleive it all started with the New Deal. I don't think anything can be solved with long term gov't handouts and subsidies. People talk about compromise. Isn't that what got us into this mess? Both sides compromise and the final product is just a hybrid that doesn't address the core problem.
