Default What is the role of government?

As a Libertarian, I firmly believe that the government's only role is to protect the rights, liberties, and safety of its people. Anything beyond that is an unnecessary expansion of power.

Take, for example, public education. If someone could please tell me where in the constitution it says that the government’s role is to educate the people, I might rest my case.

I agree to a point. Government is bloated. But I also believe that social programs are important to keep this country from disintegrating into a turn of the century-style neo-Industrialized pit of dispair.

It doesn't say that anywhere. It also doesn't prohibit the government from providing funding for education. Note: the government is not actually educating the people, they are just giving us our tax dollars back do that we can afford it. Educators do the actual educating.
