Default Obama moving to center?

The New York Time's David Sanger looks at Obama's appointments and concludes that he's planning on running things from the center-right of his party. Were the pundits right - Obama is more of a Republican than McCain?

I'm interested in what everyone here thinks about what the appointments foretell about how Obama might govern.

Quote:
Obama Tilts to Center, Inviting a Clash of Ideas

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination with the enthusiastic support of the left wing of his party, fueled by his vehement opposition to the decision to invade Iraq and by one of the most liberal voting records in the Senate.

Now, his reported selections for two of the major positions in his cabinet — Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state and Timothy F. Geithner as secretary of the Treasury — suggest that Mr. Obama is planning to govern from the center-right of his party, surrounding himself with pragmatists rather than ideologues.

The choices are as revealing of the new president as they are of his appointees — and suggest that, from its first days, an Obama White House will brim with big personalities and far more spirited debate than occurred among the largely like-minded advisers who populated President Bush’s first term.

But the names racing through the ether in Washington about the choices to follow also suggest that Mr. Obama continues to place a premium on deep experience. He is widely reported to be considering asking Mr. Bush’s defense secretary, Robert M. Gates, to stay on for a year; and he is thinking about Gen. James L. Jones, the former NATO commander and Marine Corps commandant, for national security adviser, and placing Lawrence H. Summers, the former Treasury secretary whom Mr. Obama considered putting back in his old post, inside the White House as a senior economic adviser.

Rest of opinion

If you wanna call neoconservatism a valid right-wing position, then yea you could say he's governing from the more moderate side of the Democratic party by referring to Hillary. I don't see any real alternatives to picking guys like Gates and Jones for their positions since they're certainly qualified and have connections with current military posts, and Summers is a good pick since it shows his willingness to trust free markets while balancing issues such as the environment, U.S. - Israeli relations, sovereign wealth funds, etc. Geithner's an interesting character too since he has appreciation for the Fed and believes in long-term banking success, but his willingness to negotiate flexible terms between J.P. Morgan and Bear Stearns questions the accuracy of his insight. Still, he would complement Summers as an economically viable counterbalance towards international relations against Hillary who reminds me of a tough loving yet emotional grandma of a diplomat.

Default Bama was never as left wing as

the Neocons and idiot hate monger talking heads such as Drug Addict Limpbaugh /Suan Vannity tried to claim. Yes he is and was reletively liberal but he actually is not as liberal as the Clinton Woman.

My opinion is that he will surprise us and be a lot more center than the hate mongers tried to pain him

I think so too. I wonder how that will wash with the left who voted for him and are perhaps expecting too much from him.

If he moves to the center, it will be opposite of what Jumpsuit George did after 5 people on the Supreme Court elected him president. Bush adopted a hard-right, wedge-issue, no-compromise, take-no-prisioners approach to the presidency, which, as we have seen, was a total and utter failure. Bush, at Rove's urging, pandered to the lunatic fringe of the GOP while at the same time acting as an errand boy for big business. In the end, he not only alienated all the moderates and independents in the country, but left the evangelicals feeling ignored and abandoned. A better strategy for Bush would have been to move to the center and try to be the president of all the people, not just a narrow slice of loudmouths and fat cats.

Obame is infinitely more intelligent than Dubya and will do what it takes to be a great leader.

I don't see what that has to do with Obama's cabinet appointments.

Simply trying to put the matter in some historical perspective, that's all.

If people want to comment about Obama's cabinet picks without the benefit of historical context, fine.
