It's Democracy...
...destroying itself". That was my response to a statement made by a friend of mine where the belief was that quote" In the past the world was more democratic than it is today" end quote
"Oh "I replied...the same 'ol system remains in place...with the three branches of government.....that of political...judicial...and administrative...and the same 'ol methods.....with periodic elections held!! What has actually changed is the electorate's attitude...
In years past the electorate was content with the basics...that is a roof over their heads....three square meals a day....and a job!!This attitude existed for quite a number of years....where over that same period it progressively came to the present where it was suddenly discovered by the electorate a way of life which it perceived as being beneficial to it ( in reality not necessarily so)....that of the pursuit of materialism!! Suddenly the electorate had access to all the good things in life....new cars...homes etc!! All they had to do was to work (and by this time conditions of employment and/or other had greatly improved as had the financial rewards) and to so easily possess these once inaccessable goodies....on credit!!Of course naivety plays a large part in these dynamics!! The level of naivety of an electorate is commensurate with the level of fanatical pursuit of materialism and its ancillary disasterous debt traps. Therefore the higher the general naivety of an electorate in a country, the higher is its pursuit of materialism and personal debt. Of course this is only referring to the situation in the developed countries
However there is a far greater dangerous by-product of these twins of naivety and the pursuit of materialism. Apathy! I am referring here to an extreme apathy which is present towards the all with the exception of what is perceived to be the tangible benefit to the excellence of living....that of the pursuit of materialism!!.Within these dynamics democratically elected governments can be tolerated to a point where that government can become a dictatorship....simply because its political opposite can become infected with the same "virus" as the electorate.....that of apathy!!Once again relativity plays a part here where the level of this tolerance is commensurate with the level of naivety and/or that pursuit of materialism in a country.
This is the situation in many countries today and because of this world phenomenon (which may also be described as an extreme form of "Working Class Toryism") many defacto dictatorships exist within a democracy.....and where we are seeing the unthinkable occur. That of democracy destroying itself!!
