..individuals also capable of having Conservative beliefs too?

For example: If someone completely disagrees with Jr's foreign policy but is on board his domestic agenda (SS, NCLB, MediCare etc...) what would you call that individual? Liberal or Conservative?

PS.. I don't hate the word. I just find its misuse rather annoying!!!

I suppose anything is possible. The vast majority I have seen personally only give it lip service though. Calling your beliefs conservative does not make them conservative necessarily.

Where do the majority of his views lie? If they are conservative, then he's a conservative. If they are liberal, then he's a liberal.

I have views that are considered liberal. But MOSt of them are conservative. Thats why I apply the label. I dont whine and complain when I am called on my views as being liberal...some of them are.

When I was a liberal, back in the day, I embraced the word. I didnt run from it like the modern ones do.

In my experience, 99% of the time, it is NOT misused. It's just that liberals do not like the word being applied to them because of it's negative connotation. They dont seem to realize that they themselves are the source of that negative connotation.

Let me tell you a secret: I hate abortion. I hate it so much, that I am on the fence concerning whether it should be allowed at all. I believe that Roe was wrongly decided and the penumbra announced in Griswald and relied upon in Roe is a figment of the 1972 Court's imagination.

I believe in freedom, but with regard to abortion, I believe -- as a Catholic -- that there are two freedoms involved. I would do everything in my power to convince any of my friends to consider alternatives to abortion IF it were even an issue. One reason I am on the fence is because I believe that women do have the right, to a point, to control their bodies, but it is not lost on me that personal responsibility would stop the need for all but a tiny amount of abortions. The second reason I am on the fence is the reality that women would die because of back room abortions by unqualified "doctors." I am always of two minds concerning abortion, but even on the days I swing toward pro-choice, I wouldn't cry if Roe were overturned (although it would make me concerned what other surprises the Court had in store for us).

But it is all moot. I don't think the "gay discrimination amendment" will pass and I don't that a "pro-life amendment" would ever pass. The country is too divided.

Has anything concrete even been released yet? From what I have heard, I will be very interested in what W and Congress have to say about SS privatization. The only real hurdle for me will be that they will need to show that they can do it (whatever solution is agreed upon) without further exploding the deficit. If they can do that, I am on board.

What amendment was that? Are you referring to the 1972 case Roe v. Wade?

Quote:
On a case, by the way, by a woman who is sorry she ever brought it before the supreme court. Ah, but she was young and foolish and this is just another case of abortion being a permanent solution to a temporary problem. How old would her kid be now?
From what I have read, that is a pretty common response. Many women who obtain abortions regret the decision, but life can only proceeds one way (Einstein's general theory of relativity not withstanding).

Because it allows them to mobilize their base just as it allows the right to mobilize the religious right.
I think this is good for the country. I think the moderates in this country are going to be so sick and tired of the constant pandering to each party's base, that WE are going to take over the country in 2008. Well, I am not too sure about that, but I sleep better when I convince myself of it.

We keep hearing about activist judges, but we are never told what the criteria is for being one. It seems that bush considers any judge to be an activist when he or she delivers a decision that he (bush) doesn't like.
